A paraphrased Howard Berger report from the Fan 590 this afternoon:
"Trevor Kidd will be in goal for the Leafs tonight in Buffalo. Kidd's play has been questionnable as of late, and perhaps some of the reason is that he has to work out his problems alone...because the Leafs are one of only 5 NHL teams who don't have a goaltending coach. And it's a position that should be filled sooner than later."

It seems odd that a team that makes money would not think it is necessary for even a part time coach of the most important position on the team. They have ignored their need for a competent backup as well.
The leafs seem to want to make the big splash ( Nolan, Leetch) rather than do the other thinks ( like a goalie consultant) that help you win.

There is no such thing as the perfect goalie (though some of us expect José to be sometimes, but that's another topic). Why the Leafs don't have somebody who will at least give a second opinion to change the little things a goalie does is beyond me.
But then again, we're always questioning Leaf management, aren't we?

Bah, who needs a steenkeen goalie coach. Belfour can always bounce something off Kidd, if he's off his game. Everyone else does.

Wow! I thought every NHL team had a goalie coach. Wouldn't you think it's a necessity? I sure as hell do.

Dryden would put Belfour to sleep. He does to me.

Well, that would explain the need for the most experienced goalies possible. At that point, you're minimizing the hurt of not having a specialized goaltending coach, because grizzled vets don't take instruction as readily as their younger confreres.
All the same, it's stupid for an organization to be so devoted to winning the Cup to neglect any possible (and easily implementable) means to enhance their chances. Even grizzled vets will take good tips from a goalie coach, after all.
I think this must have something to do with Pat Quinn. Another example of how this overrated gasbag has hurt the team as much as he's helped it, if he's helped it at all. Another reason they'll never win anything important with him at the helm.
Weird.

I saw Darren Eliot tonight on That's Hockey ( he's an ESPN analyst) talking about Kidd. He stated that he is poor technically and in his opinion Kidd is the worst goalie in the league right now.
Maybe if the leafs invested some time to help this guy they wouldn't be in such a tight race for Eastern Conference positions.
Hey, but that is their problem.

The reason the Leafs don't have a goalie coach: they blew the budget on a back specialist for Belfour!

I just don't see why I should care what the Leafs do or don't do.... You're right but when you live in Toronto area you get bombarded with this stuff. This section of the board is an area where we can vent about it.

C'mon, PTH, we all need a little humour in our lives and the leafs soap opera provides plenty. Had a couple of Leaf fans over on Saturday, March 20th. We flipped back and forth between Habs-Devs and Leafs-Avs. Everytime we went to the Leafs' game and the camera iso'd on Belfour, we all agreed: "There's your hope of a Stanley Cup, Leaf nation. If Eddie goes down...so do you." Although, it's always nice to remember that WITH Belfour, they still lost to Philly in 7 last year.
