By WILLIAM HOUSTON From Saturday's Globe and Mail With all the talk about who may or may not be leaving Hockey Night in Canada, there are a few likely developments. Announcer Bob Cole's last assignment will be the World Cup of Hockey in September, after which he will retire. His broadcasting partner Harry Neale may continue with Hockey Night, but that's not assured. If both Cole and Neale leave the show, Hockey Night's No.2 broadcast team of Chris Cuthbert and Greg Millen will move into the No.1 spot. They would call the Eastern games of Hockey Night's doubleheader. - Globe and Mail column

Let me be the first to say that it's about freakin' time Kneel and Bob hit the road.

I won't miss Cole or Neale. While I think he called a pretty good series in game five of the '93 Cup final, certain comments he made clearly indicated that Montreal was not his favourite team.
In recent years, his pro-Leaf announcing irked me so much I had finish watching the game on SRC. And, CBC can deny it all they want, Cole was at his Leaf-flag-waving-best, when they played the Habs.
Interestingly enough, this isn't the first time an announcer was proven to be biased towards the Leafs. Bobby Hull was quoted as saying that one of the reasons the Hawks played so hard against the Leafs was because of Foster Hewitt's biases.
On other CBC fronts, the newspapers here in Kingston have given Don Cherry front page attention. People are realizing that Grapes will probably not be back with the CBC and that has led to at least two or three front page stories in recent Whig Standard issues.
Looks as if CBC is making whole-sale changes.
Cheers.

Anything but hiring Glenn Healy as the #1 colour man on anything. He is a CBC Leafs' shill who rooted for Boston over Montreal in Round 1....then Detroit over Calgary in Round 2. How the CBC could allow this Leafs' bias is a joke. Ron MacLean? He's gone from an excellent impartial host, to a grinning Leaf yes-man who had the audacity to say Zednik took a dive when cross-checked in the nape of the neck by McGillis. Hrudey called him on it with a look of incredulity.
If Don Cherry's done...I say it'll be Pierre McGuire in the East...Hrudey in the West. Cuthbert and Millen in the East...Hughson and Garrett in the West. It's going to be Toronto-Vancouver biased anyway, so like it or lump it.

I'll miss the excitement that Bob Cole's voice would bring to each game. I agree that he was biased towards the Leafs but, aside from that, IMO he will still go down as a broadcasting legend.
CBC's pro-Leaf attitude really began to show over the past five years or so. I recall them being fairly neutral throughout the 80s and for most of the 90s. I understand that Leaf success equals ratings for them, but they should remember that they are a national network. The paycheques that Cole, Neale, McLean and Cherry recieve are funded by Canadians from coast-to-coast, not just from Toronto.

That is so true. Cole could bring tremendous excitement into even the most mundane fantasies. In fact, a lot of his calling was fantasy, seeing as his eyesight rivalled Mr Magoo's. Having said that, he did make fiction quite lively. Jim Hughson is an excellent, unbiased announcer. Garrett is a twit. I doubt they could get along.

Jim Hughson is easily my favorite hockey broadcaster. TSN's Gord Miller and Dave Randorf are ok play-by-play men - they're relatively unbiased and knowledgeable - but they don't bring the same excitement that Bob Cole does.

Jim Hughson is an excellent, unbiased announcer. Garrett is a twit. I doubt they could get along. They worked together this year doing Vancouver games on TSN or Sportsnet....I forget which. They seemed to get along fine...at least on air. I don't like Garrett, as he advocated the Canucks crashing Theo when Montreal held a 2-0 lead out in Vancouver this season. Agreed, he is a twit....but that hasn't stopped Glenn Healy from working.

Jim Hughson does a good job calling the Habs games in my EA Sports NHL 2004* seasons, as well.

Are these "players" "UFA's" after the playoffs? Could the CBC afford all of them? I'd snap Hughson up in a heart beat. TSN lost a lot when he left them for Vancouver radio and less travel (originally). I like Cuthbert as the main man. He's a little high strung, but so was Cole. Chris' voice is a little high, but it's clear and his delivery is smooth. Of the colour guys mentioned the only one that interests me is Macguire. Sure he can be bombastic, but he's likely the most impartial voice in hockey right now. Pierre doesn't pull punches and calls them as he sees them. Garrett, Healy, and Millen are wastes of air. They're all former goalies too. Hmmmmmm .... too many pucks to the head?
