Hopefully he ends up in Chicago and not Boston. With the talent Boston already has (mainly in Thorton and Samsonov) I'd hate to see an experienced GM like Burke make them even stronger.

But at least he says what is on his mind . . . like it or not. Exactly. Brian is a great quote, and a shrewd mind. HE can be bombastic, but I've rarely speak inaccurately. He's on the ball more often than not. He's a great hockey man that will move on to make another team really strong. Look at what he did with Vancouver. Came in 1999 and took a team with less than 60pts and financial dispair, and turned it into a team with lots of talent (under "fair" contracts), a perennial winner, and annual profits. Brian is a fine executive. In fact, if BG weren't here, and Montreal was in the market I'd want to snap him up.

Yeah, I agree, mistake by McCammon in not resigning him. I think they're annoyed at the fact the Canucks haven't been going far in the playoffs, and you have to put that at Burke's door. The only area his team is not really good in, is in goal. Like Bobby Clarke, he's always fallen short in that one area. (I still don't think Clarke has gotten it right yet, but they're good enough to beat Tampa).

It's hard to like him when he defended Todd Bertuzzi as if he were a saint. His whining in the 02 and 03 playoffs was like nails on a chalk board. He has Pat Quinn syndrome. Blame everybody except his own team.

He built a mountain from a molehill franchise and reduced media mountains to molehills. My kind of guy (nudge nudge wink wink). I can't remember the media wag who said this, but I believe it to be the only logical explanation for Burke's dismissal: The owner didn't like him. I also believe that to be the only logical explanation for Martin's dismissal from his post with the Sens. Guys like Burke and Martin are *not* a dime-a-dozen, as I think Vancouver and Otawa will soon enough discover. In fact, if I were ponying up for an NHL franchise right now (yeah, dream on Bettman), the prospect of being able to corral a Burke/Martin tandem would just about make me wet my wallet.

The comments in the moderate media in Vancouver, are not so much that John McCaw didn't like Burke, but that McCaw's right hand man, Stan McCammon didn't care for him. McCammon's excuse is basically that Burke did a great job getting the Nucks to this level, but isn't the guy to push them over the hump. Any excuse in a storm, huh?

Burke for me would be a more than acceptable replacement for Don Cherry.
Coach's Corner would then become GM Place.

Burke would be a step up from the uncouth Cherry.

Burke would be a step up from everyone who is currently employed to work hockey for the CBC.

I think it's a great idea, but the CBC aren't smart enough to think it up, let alone pursue it. Burke is a FA in a climate where many teams aren't going to sign a GM. He said that he thought he could be on the sidelines for some time.
He makes great copy, like Cherry, but is far more on the ball and with it than Don. Also Brian has a hell of a lot going on between the ears where Cherry is the equivalent of a senoir Beavis or Butthead.

Call it "GM's Gallery" , or "Burkey's Beefs" ;D
This of the marketing value if they could get Schneider's to sign on. ;D

I think that getting Burke to replace Cherry is a fantastic idea! He has the same passion as Cherry but, unlike Cherry, he has a brain to match. And to top it all off, with Burke, there would be no more Leaf bias. Call it a win-win-win situation.

Burke says he's solidly in Cherry's corner Deposed Canucks general manager rumoured to be in line for TV job By GRANT KERR Wednesday, May 12, 2004 - Page S3 VANCOUVER -- Brian Burke, the deposed president and general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, would like another blustery hockey personality to keep his job. Burke is squarely in the corner of Don Cherry, the outspoken star of Coach's Corner on Hockey Night in Canada on the CBC. - Globe and Mail article
