tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=94320TSN, thru ESPN, is reporting that the Rangers have signed Nylander to a 3 year, $8.9 million deal. It's an interesting move on Slats' part. It goes against the whole youth movement thing, but I guess they need veteran offense from someone. He could help I suppose.

That probably puts a crimp in Boston's plans.
I was glad to see that the price wasn't exhorbitant. It might make Gainey's offer to Kovalev seem more realisitic.
It's also dollars the Rangers won't have available for Kovy... but then again, dollars never stopped the Rangers before.

At this point the only firm interest is from Montreal. AK's agent has said that Pittsburgh was never really a factor. Patrick never made a formal offer.

Although Nylander remains within the East, he's out of the Northeast Division and on a team that probably won't be a contender. Considering the mass exodus from the Bruins, this move facilitates the Habs' goal of moving higher within the division.

Yeah, the Rangers are in their youth movement, so while Nylander's a nice catch for them, it probably won't be enough to gaina playoff spot, but who knows?....different chemistry, better attitude, real goaltending from Blackburn....playoffs?
As much as it improves the Rangers, it's gotta kill Boston. Nylander would have helped take the heat off Thornton. Now you know Thornton's gonna be peeved, big time. So his game could take a dive. No Murray, No Rolston, no Nylander. Ouch. There is a god, and he's not wild about Harry.

I can hear the Thornton to Toronto rumours already. ;D As Boston stumbles on the rink of Bruin, Thornton's journey to the Davos playground seems more and more likely.

I can hear the call in shows now: "why doesn't Ferguson just offer Kaberle & Antropov" That sounds fair to me.

We don't want to tear down Boston only to boost Toronto.

Too bad this NHL season might die before it gets going. Its one of those where the stars seem to be lining up for us. Good players traded for, rookies signed, Boston losing players left and right (and centre and defense), Toronto aging yet one more year and with a gimp in goal. I can see it now, Habs in the top 4 and both the Leafs and Bruins missing the playoffs. Sigh.

I look at it this way. The longer the hold-out is on the season, the longer it'll take the Leafs to get their legs going. By the time they finally do, they'll already be out of the playoff hunt!
