I was talking to my brother after the 3rd and we both questioned Luongo's play to that point. I was never comfortable with his saves, unlike Brodeur. We also both thought Theo had played better in the "preseason" games and that he should have been 2nd in line. My bone of contention with Gretzky was the reason he gave for Luongo starting. "If he (Brodeur) can't play, we know Roberto Luongo can do the job that's why we picked him No.2" So Wayne, why did you pick Theo ..... because he can't do the job? In a crucial game like that you don't put a goalie in who you picked No.2 .... you put the goalie in who is playing the best at the time. Theodore was far better in the exhibition then Luongo, and Gretzky himself said thet he woudl prefer Theo of the bench over Luongo. I think they got lucky ..... Gretzky's luck will run out if he continue to make foolhardy decisions because he won't admit the first picks were wrong ....... just imagine if Yzerman did not show the class to step down, and Luongo lost.

Doesn't the coach decide who plays and who doesn't?

Doesn't the coach decide who plays and who doesn't? In this tournament with about 12 coaches on the team .... I'd have to say it is a group descision, with Gretzky having veto power.

A season without Grapes is like a season without whine. He's past that stage, already vinegary, good only for salad dressing.

We were luck to win that game. It was a terrible effort. Frankly, that's the kind of game I would have expected in the round robin. As soon as we started chasing the puck in our own end, the Czech's started using their pick plays. Some of them bordered on interference IMO, but we had no answer for the play. Routinely the chasing got us out of position and the picks kept us from getting back.
When our guys got the puck the appeared to not know what to do with it. Far too many times, I saw forwards collect the puck after 30 seconds of running around only to rag it in their own end. Did they chip it out? No. Did they fire it down the ice for a stoppage? No. They looked lost as they tried to skate it out, and often turned the puck over before even getting it out. It was a totally sloppy effort by the whole team.
The number of shots the Czech's had was a little misleading. They were throwing pucks at the net from everywhere. They even put pucks on net from the corner.
Finland is playing perhaps the best TEAM game of anyone in the tournament. Canada will have to be smart, and patient, to win.

He's past that stage, already vinegary, good only for salad dressing. And a very garishly-dressed salad it is...close to being tossed.
