I was surfing last night and noticed that Bell Making the Cut on CBC was making its selection of 18, all who will be present next week live in TO from which the 6 Canadian-team GM's to make their "draft". Not really household names, not surprisingly, so did some quick research into their background and noticed some interesting facts (at least interesting to this NHL starved guy living in -30 plus weather of late):
- 4 of the 18 are currently on the roster of Texas ECHL team.
Too much of a coincidence for this inquiring mind, so I did more digging, and found out this:
- Texas is the ECHL affiliate of Florida Panthers.
- The Making the Cut staff included Mike Keenan (GM of Florida Panthers) and Jack Birch (Director of Hockey Operations for the same Panthers). Both were heavily involved in the selection/cutting process on TV supposedly (I only watched part of two episodes, including the selection of the final 18 last night).
- 5 of the 18 were invited to San Antonio's (Florida's AHL affiliate) training camp this past fall: James Demone, Dominic Periard, Lou Dickenson, Eric Sonnenberg, and Mark Wires.
- 10 of the 18 were on the Florida Rookie team that participated at the September 4 team tourney in Pierrefonds hosted by our own Habs: Daniel Jacobs, Jonathan Robert, Brad Woods, Drew Kivell, James Demone, Trevor Cunning, Dominic Noel, Lou Dickenson, Eric Sonnenberg, and Mark Wires.
An additional unrelated fact is that Matt Hubbauer, one of the final 18, played for the Toronto rookies in the same September Pierrefonds tourney as a try-out for TO, and now plays for St John's in the AHL.
So, it appears as though 6 Canadian teams will get some extensive scouting for an invitee to their next training camp, Florida has quite clearly benefited from their key personnel being involved in this show and has been able to get a bit of a jump by getting their fingers on 11 of the 18 finalists.
Maybe none of these guys ever make the NHL, but I found the "Florida Advantage" interesting.
