I've been going down to my hometown rink (The Oldest Operating Arena in the World) Galt Arena Gardens in Cambridge, Ont. to see the Sr. AAA Hornets play.
Ringside seats for some great hockey. As I mentioned in another post, Gilbert Dionne is on the team and leading team scoring. Steve Rice is the captain...Todd Harvey and Scott Walker (locked-out Cambridge boys) have played some games as well.
A little post-game report on the Friday, Dec. 10 game.
(I'm still going through withdrawal.)
It reminded me of many Habs' games the past few seasons...you'll see why....
Hornets up 3-0 in the second period. They go into protective mode. Petrolia bangs in a rebound off the crossbar. 3-1. Hornets get a PP. Bad pinch....Petrolia 2-on-1 SH goal. 3-2. End of second period.
Third period. Cambridge goalie Mullen lets in a weak one with around 10 minutes left. 3-3.
With around 4 minutes left...Dionne fires a laser wrister through the 5-hole. 4-3 Cambridge. Okay....we got away with one, right? Wrong.
The ref had been letting all kinds of mugging go on around the Petrolia net as the Hornets were trying to go up 5-3. Then he calls a very weak penalty on Cambridge with 1:40 left. The sparse, yet enthusiastic crowd goes nuts.
Just as the Petrolia goalie is racing to the bench to make it a 2-man advantage....Mullen gets the puck behind the net and tries a Ron Hextall shot. DOH! Knocked down about 5 feet in front and it's 4-4. And to OT we go. Not more than 20 seconds in.....giveaway at the Cambridge blueline...2-on-1....game over 5-4 Petrolia.
A classic meltdown....aided by a last minute poor call and a huge mental error by our goaltender.
Sound like a Habs' game, or what?
