AK Bars a bustBy ERIC DUHATSCHEK Wednesday, March 23, 2005 Page S7 AK Bars Kazan, the Russian team that loaded up with locked-out National Hockey League players to try to win a league championship, was eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs yesterday. AK Bars, which acquired 15 NHL players since the lockout started in September, was eliminated in four games by Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in a best-of-five quarter-final series. Lokomotiv, with eight NHL players, defeated AK Bars 2-1, ending the season for a club that had spent an unprecedented amount on player salaries, by European standards, and had been given the nickname New York Rangers East by the media. AK Bars -- with scoring power from players such as Dany Heatley, Vincent Lecavalier, Alexei Kovalev, Alexei Morozov, Ilya Kovalchuk, Slava Kozlov and Denis Arkhipov, and also from defencemen Alexei Zhitnik and Darius Kasparaitis -- managed only five goals in the four games against Lokomotiv, whose relatively unknown Canadian goalkeeper Marc Lamothe stymied the AK Bars attack. - tinyurl.com/425o4

Mr Cranky will certainly get a kick out of Kovalev flunking for the "European Rangers" exactly the way he did for the real Rangers...
Once more the proof that building a winning team is not about assembling stars from everywhere...

They should put in some sort of salary cap, so these poor big market clubs don't keep getting screwed over by all these malicious, small market guys.
