This year's version of the CIS University Cup in mens hockey was a treat to watch, as the University of Alberta Golden Bears went on to beat the University of Saskatoon Huskies 4-3 in OT. What a barnburner and entertaining game as the #1 ranked UofA battled in the unfamiliar and busy confines of Rexall Place instead of their normal and cozy yellow dome on campus. The upstart Huskies controlled the game and the scoreboard early and for most of the game, but the unbelievable happened as Ben Thomson scored with 22 ticks left to head to OT, where he potted his second of the game to secure a record 11th CIS mens hockey championship for the Edmonton school.
Where do all the old CHL players go? Well, to the CIS it would appear, as most of these guys all seemed to have perfected their game in the various three CHL leagues. As such, this lesser known brand of hockey is both exciting and entertaining. It doesn't have the same top draft picks as some of the NCAA hockey programmes, but the overall quality is quite good.
I must admit, the lack of NHL is opening my and other eyes to the quality of the other levels of hockey, and I know I will try and catch a Golden Bears game live in the City of Champions next year if my schedule works out. It was fun to watch.
I will still try and catch at least one Habs game live once they return to work, but maybe instead of other NHL games, I might catch a few Dogs, CHL and CIS games instead.
