Shane Doan: hell-bent and heaven-sentChurchgoing NHL captain doesn't hesitate to drop the gloves, ALLAN MAKI writesBy ALLAN MAKI Saturday, April 16, 2005 Page S1 CALGARY -- When Shane Doan goes to church in Scottsdale, Ariz., people notice. They see his bent nose and the occasional shiner. Some have watched him play hockey the night before. Many have seen him drop his gloves and throw punches in bunches, which is why Doan knows what they're thinking: "What in the good book is he doing here? The man acts like a demon then smiles like an angel. How can he be both?" The answer is simple: Doan is both. He is the God-driven son of an Alberta cattle rancher who inscribes his hockey sticks with 29:11, a biblical passage from Jeremiah that reads: "For I know well the plans I have in mind for you," the Lord declares, "plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." Doan is also hell-bent on skates, 216 pounds of sinew and grit; one tough hombre who'd knock you flat, pot the winning goal, then knock you flat again. Few players in the National Hockey League possess his devastating combination of size, strength, skating ability and passion, and last year was proof of that. - tinyurl.com/862yf

Harold Ballard had a thing against Christians, especially evangelicals (Blaise is in good company, I guess ). He was under the impression that a Christian didn't have what it takes to play hockey hard. Laurie Boschman proved him wrong, though he wouldn't accept it.
