Hockey fans in 30 cities would tune in to see if they get Crosby. Why not televise it for them? Fans in two cities would tune in to watch Nashville play Phoenix. If you are looking for TV exposure, and the networks want to carry your show, why not accomodate them? Gary Bettman.............. that must be the reason! "There's nothing wrong with the game. We don't need no stinkin' PR—we're the NHL and with this CBA we are idiot-proof (meaning no more idiots can join the club - for the time being). Go away now." - first draft of CBA announcement memo.

I think it's very foolish for the NHL not to televise the draft lottery.
After a year-long layoff, they can use all the publicity and attention that they can get.

Crosby draft lottery to be televisedBy TIM WHARNSBY Wednesday, July 20, 2005 Page S1 It will be lights, camera, action for the National Hockey League draft lottery, after all. The league will announce today that it has changed its mind in the way it will reveal the winner of the Sidney Crosby sweepstakes. Instead of holding the anticipated draft lottery behind closed doors, the event will now be live on television on Friday afternoon. The event will be broadcast in Canada on TSN at 4 p.m. ET. Clearly, the league felt media and fan displeasure this week over its initial decision to announce the lottery winner and to forego a live viewing of the drawing drama. The live draft lottery will only be part of Friday's proceedings. Earlier in the day, the board of governors will vote to ratify the collective agreement tentatively struck a week ago and then will decide on rule changes to adopt for the 2005-06 season. Each NHL club has a shot at winning that first overall pick in a slightly weighted draft lottery. The Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins have the best shot at landing Crosby with three balls each in the lottery. The Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators and Phoenix Coyotes have two balls each. The remaining 16 teams, including the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks, have one each. Crosby, 17, of Cole Harbour, N.S., is the highest-rated prospect in hockey. - tinyurl.com/cm94d

Here is my "Plan" for the lottey...
Since their drawing from 30th to 1st, that beams teams with 3 balls have a greater chance of getting that 30th spot.
Unless...
They make it so that if the Rags ball comes out first for the 30th pick, they throw that one away and draw another one and their left with 2 balls.
If I were that GM that was drawn after the Rags for the 30th pick, I would be Pi$$ed.

My understanding was that they will award the picks 1 through 30 but announce them 30 through 1. It is very confusing to know whether we will see the lottery as the balls come out.

I don't have any insiders insight, but it sounds like the Academy Awards, the picks have already been made and they will be announced in reverse order. Instead of Whoopi Goldberg, it will be hosted by either Paris Hilton or Gary Bettman (equally intelligent).

Check back for further details. - www.nhl.com/ We don't have to see the balls drop. I trust these guys. If the New York Rangers win the Crosby lottery, then Sather deserves it. The one time exemption allows the Islanders to shed themselves of Yashin. Never mind that they blew it when the Senators refused to bow to Yashin's ridiculous demands. It's ok to give the Rangers 3 ping pong balls, as long as they don't put magnets in them. How about a rule change that stops clutching and grabbing of Rangers and Islanders forwards. Sudden death overtime in tie games with 4 on 3, advantage for big market teams. Montreal deserves a fair shot at Crosby, not 1/3 the shot the Rangers get. If you count the Rangers, Devils and Islanders, Crosby can start looking for housing in manhattan now instead of waiting for the sham draft.

Did a little math here. The chance of Crosby playing in Canada is 16.7% vs. 83.3% in the US. Montreal is 2% vs New York 11% (NYR, NJD, NYI). Perhaps Bettman is better and faster at math than I am? Seems fair??

Perhaps things have changed, but according to today's Vancouver Sun, the actual lottery will be conducted behind closed doors at the BOG meeting, and the announcement (in order of 30th to 1st) is what will be on TSN. The original plan was for Bettman to make the announcement at a press conference.
By the way, I hear they will not be using balls for the lottery - instead it will be poker chips because the owners don't have any balls.

They weren't bluffing. Maybe poker chips are appropriate?
