NHL may be prepared to eat its youngRookies face dramatic rollback of entry salariesBy DAVID SHOALTS Friday, June 10, 2005 Page S1 Arguments rage about what will eventually make up the next collective agreement between the National Hockey League's owners and players but both sides agree on one thing -- rookies are about to take a stinging hit on salaries. Unlike Ilya Kovalchuk, who earned an estimated $14-million (all figures U.S.) over his three-year entry-level contract, emerging stars such as Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin may have to settle for something like $4.8-million, which would be spread over four years if the demands of the NHL owners are met. A day after The Globe and Mail reported that the league and its players have come to a salary cap agreement on a new collective contract, it looks like the clock will be set back 10 years for entry-level salaries, to $850,000, what they were when they were introduced in the previous agreement. The owners are demanding that total salary and bonuses be limited to a total of $1.2-million a year, while the union has offered a total cap of $1.7-million. - tinyurl.com/awqr5Oh Karl, make mine a poor working-class lager...
