...of course they will sign more UFAs to replace them... so in the end will they really be younger this year...
Look for Allison to play for the Leafs (he clearly said that he wants to play for the Leafs)... but what a ? health wise! Huge gamble...

... and a lot weaker... their farm system is thin on talent, especially up front... O'Neill I believe is taking Roberts' place, but as for Nieuwendyk...hmm. Let's see if Stajan and Antropov can live up to their justified hype...by Leaf fans.

Let's see if Stajan and Antropov can live up to their justified hype...by Leaf fans. Stajan looks like a decent prospect. They freed up some cash to look for other free agents while getting younger. They lose play-off experience though. But it looks like a clever move if they can sign people like Foote and Kovalev with that money.

How things change. June 30, 2004 - Ferguson panics and signs Roberts, Joe N. and Belfour at the deadline. He is out from under the Roberts /Joe N. deals but he is still stuck with the Belfour contract for another year.

August 1, 2005 MINNESOTA WILD SIGNS FREE AGENT LW ANDREI NAZAROV SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed free agent LW Andrei Nazarov pronounced (nah-ZAH-rohv) to a contract. “If Andrei adds to the team's physical character and makes us that much tougher to play against, he has the opportunity to make a real impact here,” said Risebrough. Nazarov, 31 (5/22/74), recorded three points (1-2=3) and 125 penalty minutes (PIM) in 33 games with the Phoenix Coyotes during the 2003-04 NHL campaign. The 6-foot-5, 243-pound winger enjoyed his best season with Calgary in 1999-2000 when he tallied 32 points (10-22=32) and 78 PIM in 76 contests. He has collected 53 goals, 71 assists and 1,403 PIM in 569 career NHL contests with San Jose, Tampa Bay, Calgary, Anaheim, Boston and Phoenix during his 11-year career. Nazarov notched two assists and 173 PIM in 32 games with Metallurg Novokuznetsk and Avangard Omsk of the Russian League last season. The Chelyabinsk, Russia-native was originally selected by the San Jose Sharks in the first round (10th overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. NHL forward Zigmund Palffy says he wants to sign a longer contractposted August 1 @ 19:10, EST BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) - Zigmund Palffy, a former Los Angeles Kings forward and now an unrestricted free agent, wants to sign a contract to last him through the end of his NHL career, a newspaper reported Monday. "The avalanche with contract signing ... will start on Aug. 1," Palffy told Slovak daily SME. "My former club, Los Angeles Kings, is showing greatest interest, but I don't exclude that in the end I will end up in Toronto, Detroit or in Florida." The 33-year old, who has played in the NHL since the 1993-94 season, said he was not nervous about his future. "I will certainly not take the first contract they will offer," Palffy said. "I want a more long-term contract, three to four years, which would last until the end of my career in the NHL." Palffy made a name for himself as Islanders' top scorer before being traded to the Kings in 1999. He has also played on Slovakia's national team. - www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/shownews.jsp?content=h080119A

Market heats up for ModanoTSN.ca Staff 8/2/2005 1:24:20 AM For the first time in his career, Mike Modano may be donning a jersey other than that of the Stars. According to a report on RDS.ca, the Boston Bruins are expected to sign the 35-year-old centre with an announcement coming as early as Tuesday. Modano had three offers to consider with the Bruins being the front-runner. The Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins are the others in the race for his services. On Monday, Modano told the Dallas Morning News that the Stars never made an offer to him or agent Brian Lawton and that the Stars are hesitant about offering him a long-term deal because of his age. "It just doesn't make sense," Modano told the newspaper. ''I'm old at 35 and Zubie isn't? I don't get it." Modano was refering to the three-year, $12 million contract defenceman Sergei Zubov signed on Sunday. Zubov, 35, has played eight seasons with the Stars, helping the club win the Stanley Cup in 1999. "All things being equal, I'd love to be here," he said. "It's a great place, and I want to finish my career here. But I guess we just have to go out and see what's out there." Modano was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1st round (1st overall) in 1988. In 1101 career games, the 6-3, 205-pound Modano has collected 458 goals and 1106 points. - tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=132175

He won't take the first deal that comes but he better not wait too long. There is a lot more competition out there now and the free agent frenzy has started a month late this year.

I remember seeing Clarke when he was asked if he was disappointed in not securing a better draft position. He really didn't seem to be all that concerned about it and almost immediately broke into talking about free agents. Here's the Sportsnet FA tracker. I can see why Adam Foote signed with Columbus. No doubt their defense corps will improve significantly, but it will come with a pricetag. Might be worth it for the Blue Jackets. It certainly was for Foote anyway. Cheers.

Bruins sign Murray & McEachern The Boston Bruins have agreed to terms with right wings Glen Murray on a four-year contract and Shawn McEachern on a two-year contract, it was announced today by Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell. Both players were unrestricted free agents, and in keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not released. Murray, 32, has played the last three NHL seasons with the Bruins, after returning to the team in October, 2001 that made him their first pick, 18th overall, in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Murray has scored 30-or-more goals in each of his last three NHL seasons, including a career-high of 44 in 2002-03 with the Bruins. The 6'3", 225 lb. native of Halifax, Nova Scotia has played 13 NHL seasons with Boston, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles with career NHL totals of 268 goals, 255 assists and 523 points with 533 penalty minutes in 823 career NHL games. Hmmm... Murray for $4.1M... Demitra for $4.5M... me thinks the market for Kovalev is set.
Looks like Gainey's offer of $4.5M per season last summer was right on the money.

Modano: Deal with Stars is 'pretty close'06:37 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 By MIKE HEIKA / The Dallas Morning News The Stars are close to signing center Mike Modano to a long-term deal, almost assuring that he will finish his career with one team. "We've had a number of productive conversations today and from my understanding we're very close to a deal," Stars owner Tom Hicks said. "But I do not yet have confirmation on it." Modano said he and the Stars remain in negotiations and confirmed that they are very close to agreeing on a five-year contract. "I think we're pretty close, but we're going back in for one more session about all of the details of the deal," Modano said Tuesday about 6 p.m. The Stars offer is a total of $17.5 million or an average of $3.5 million per season. Modano said there still is an offer from Boston for four years and $20 million. He said he would very much like to remain a Dallas Star. "There's all sorts of ways to look at the advantages of the deal that don't have anything to do with money," Modano said. "If it gets done, we'll talk about them." - tinyurl.com/77yf4

Sabres Sign Numminen Jeremy White - Thursday, August 4, 2005 - 10:25 AM
WGR - The Buffalo Sabres made a move today in the free agency frenzy. WGR has learned that the Sabres have signed Teppo Numminen.
Numminen spent last season with the Dallas Stars, after spending the majority of his career with the Phoenix Coyotes.
Numminen is a defenseman that brings an offensive ability to the blue line. He's known as a good puck mover, and posted 48 points in 2002 (13G, 35A).
Last year with Dallas, Numminen had 3 goals and 14 assists, while registering a -5.
At 37 years old, Numminen has been around the league for a while...playing in two NHL All-Star games (1999 and 2000). He also won a silver medal (1988) and a bronze medal (1998) with the Finnish Olympic team.
