Best all-around defensemen I've seen in my short lifetime:
Harvey, Orr, Park, Robinson, Savard, Lapointe, Potvin, Coffey, Lidstrom, Pronger, Traverse—I've likely missed a few.

I'll be honest, I never had much time for Coffey, but it's fitting that his number is being retired. He was the fourth forward whenever he was on the ice and was a major contributor to the Oiler juggernauts of the 80's.
The best offensive d-men I've seen?
#1 Bobby Orr #2 Paul Coffey #3 Denis Potvin #4 Brad Park/Larry Robinson #5 Nik Lidstrom #6 Guy Lapointe
The best defensive d-men I've seen?
#1 Bobby Orr #2 Rod Langway #3 Denis Potvin #4 Serge Savard #5 Jacques Laperriere #6 Bill White #7 Larry Robinson #8 Scott Stevens #9 JC Tremblay
The hardest-hitting?
#1 Scott Stevens #2 Denis Potvin #3 Chris Pronger #4 Larry Robinson #5 Tim Horton
The best all-around I've seen in my lifetime?
#1 Bobby Orr #2 Denis Potvin #3 Brad Park #4 Scott Stevens #5 Larry Robinson #6 Nik Lidstrom #7 Bogje Salming
Where does Coffey belong? Right where he is as an Oiler alumnus. Very gifted in seeing the whole ice, great wheels and a quick, accurate shot. Not my pick as an all-around guy, but definitely worthy of the honour he is about to receive. Thanks for the entertainment!
Cheers.

Good choices, Dis, only I think you're not as kind as you could be to Larry. He had that rare ability to intimidate without overt means. A heavy hitter, at the most important times (Dornhoefer, to send a message to the Flyers) and a key point getter. Park didn't win many Cups despite being on some pretty good teams.

Gotta agree with you DIS, Coffey was a great and exciting offensive dmen but IMO he wasn't the complete package.

Though I've got to say that IMO Coffey's defensive play got short shrift by many due to the overwhelming quality of his offensive talent.
