also on TSN :
"OTTAWA (CP) - The Ottawa Senators have avoided salary arbitration with Marian Hossa by signing the star forward to an $18-million US, three-year deal.
A source said Hossa will earn $5 million this season, $6 million in 2006-07 and $7 million the following season.
The Sens and Hossa were scheduled to go to arbitration Tuesday morning if a deal wasn't reached.
Hossa, 26, had reportedly wanted between $5 million and $6 million a year while the Sens were hoping to pay him less than $4 million.
The Slovak recorded 36 goals and 46 assists in 82 regular-season games in 2003-2004. In 467 career games, he has 188 goals and 202 assists."

Is it just me, or does that seem like a hefty price? I know he's put up strong point totals in regular seasons, but when I think of $6 million players I don't think of Hossa.

How long before we hear that the new CBA isn't working?

The Rod Bryden era is definitely over.
I think this is the Sens working The TBay Plan: this is the year.
Alfie must be pretty unhappy, though . . . the star centre earns $4.6 this year and is locked in for a longer term.
As much as he is the flashy one of the team, I'd rather spend the money on Redden and keep a strong defence.
Another Eklund rumor bites the dust . . .

Is Gainey the only intelligent GM who is financially responsible? I like to keep under $36M and keep my options open. The Hab's don't have a superstsr (Theo included) and should be way under the cap compared to Tampa Bay and Ottawa. Now I'd like to see Ryder get his $1.1M, Markov $1.5M - $1.75, and Theo held to $4.5 for one year if necessary.
I am still wondering what happens if a team exceeds the cap? Do they forfeit games, hang by the thumbs, lose a draft pick or simply pay a fine like a slap on the wrists.

The guy is good but not THAT good. Add Hossa to Iginla, Thornton and Lecavalier to the plum free agents off the list for 2006. Ferguson Jr. must be wondering what's happening to that plan he put together for next year.

Bye-bye Marian.
Interesting how his brother Marcel plays on a better team than the one that he was just moved to. Burn.
