Report: Elias signs Devils' qualifying offer TSN.ca Staff with files 8/24/2005 9:32:39 AMThe New York Post reports that the New Jersey Devils have signed forward Patrik Elias to his one-year qualifying offer of $4.18 million US. If Elias and the Devils do not negotiate a long-term deal this season, the 29-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Recovering from Hepatitis A, Elias is not expected to be ready for the start of the season. His salary could be deductible from the payroll under the long-term injury provision that requires players to miss at least 10 games. Once he returns, his salary would count against the cap. As it stands, Elias' salary puts the Devils' payroll at about $44 million US, which is $5 million over the league's salary cap.Elias was set to make $5.5 million US in the cancelled 2004-05 season. Elias has led the Devils in scoring five times, and has 207 goals and 459 points in 558 games. TSN/CPWhat is Lamoriello doing? New NHL? Fiscal responsibility? Riiiight.

The signing (the Mogilny one) puts the Devils over the $39-million salary cap, but less than the 10 percent maximum. Lamoriello said the club will be back under the threshold before the Oct. 1 deadline.news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050817/ap_on_sp_ho_ne/hkn_devils_mogilnyWhat the heck does that mean? Does it mean teams can go over the cap during the off-season, but come Oct. 1 they have to be under? What if they aren't? Are the last few contracts voided? And does this mean there is going to be a fire-sale in Jersey?

And does this mean there is going to be a fire-sale in Jersey? This is rather strange isn't it. I find the Devils are a pretty ordinary team to be near (and even over) the cap limit. I mean, remove Brodeur and I don't even think you have playoff team there....

I also find this strange, especially considering it is coming from Lou L. This guy is considered one of the savviest GMs in the league.
Once Elias comes back he must do some serious contract dumping. I don't get it.

And I believe Scott Stevens is still unsigned.
Strange that this kind of news is coming out of The Swamp.
