Eklund is reporting : hockeyrumors.blogspot.com/BIG TRADE COMING: HOSSA + FOR HEATLEY From a Good Source (E4-5) This trade is all but announced... Hossa and a top four defenseman (could be Phillips, may not be) from the Sens to Atlanta for Heatley... Doesn't make sense to me, reports are saying hossa just signed with Ottawa. But it would be a good trade for Ottawa.

On TSN too. Why? That is, why would Atlanta do it? Heatley is RFA (granted unsigned); Hossa is indeed the 6 Million Dollar Man. ATL wouldn't have had to pay Heatley $6M and I'd be happy with his past play -- and Hossa is another one with sitoutitis.

Maybe Atlanta would not take Hossa unless he was signed and the Sens included a defenseman so that they can sign Redden. Actually if the Thrashers get a top 4 d-man, I like this trade from their end.

Interesting salary-wise: ATL's is $23,362,000 + 5.5 + Kovalchuk still to come. So they have room and probably got somewhat better. Maybe Heatley decided he needed a change of scenery (and a place where hockey is known) -- and Hossa has pretty much wanted a trade for a while (star billing? He still doesn't get it).

Wow! I'm still trying to digest this. You don't often see two teams swap young, franchise type players still in their prime. As good as Hossa is, I would never give up on a 6-3, 215 lb franchise center like Dany Heatley. He's a world class player with the only question being the emotional baggage from the accident a few years back. Wow.

Looking at the above chart the Sens were dangerously close to the cap—only $500K under. The deal sends Hossa and de Vries to Atlanta, that's $8M+ of salary headed the right way (for cap purposes). Heatley's 2003-04 salary was $1.075M. Whatever Ottawa signs him for will result in a net gain under the cap for the Sens, over keeping Hossa and de Vries.

TSN is reporting in there article that Heatley, has agreed to a three-year, $13.5 million US deal with Ottawa.

Well, while he has to potential to put up Hossa-type numbers, who knows if Heately is totally healed from his injuries or not. This is a risk for Ottawa me thinks. If it pans out then Muckler will look like a genius. If it doesn't, he'll have a pretty expensive egg on his face.
That aside, both teams got what they were after. Ottawa moves a talented European that frees up some salary to sign either Redden and/or Chara. And while he hasn't put up the numbers recently, Heatly is a character kid with the potential to back up wearing a "C" on his jersey down the road. On the other hand, Atlanta has another exciting player that will put fans in the seats.
In any event, I imagine Gainey sat up straight in his seat when he heard the news. And, I can visualize John Ferguson Jr. holding his head with his hands. On the surface at least, the Battle of Ontario will be a lopsided one me thinks.
Cheers.

They can have our Hossa. I think heatley is easily worth 2 Hossas. Heatley is a potential superstar.

Lehtonen is ready to make the jump. He did well in a short stint with the Thrashers last season (undefeated, I think in...five games?). The Thrashers are a team on the rise regardless. Moving Heatley seemed like the only option available; Dany probably couldn't take it anymore and needed to leave. At any rate, I don't think he'll ever be the same player we know he could be.

Spezza won't be happy with $1.1M for long. He will be due for a big raise and I don't know where it will come from. You can't squeeze much out of the guys who make $450K and nobody is volunteering for pay cuts. Gainey can go shopping at Winners for Nieman Markus overflow.
