New CBA spurs spate of defections`Baffling' clause drives role players to European clubs
`It's a side effect nobody really anticipated:' agentPAUL HUNTER SPORTS REPORTER Quietly, over the last few weeks, Pierre Hedin, Harold Druken and David Ling have left the Maple Leafs organization to sign contracts with European clubs. Though none of those departures is necessarily worthy of a headline on its own, there are those in hockey who see the defections as symptomatic of an evolving problem, just the beginning of a larger, league-wide exodus of depth players brought about by the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement. "It's a side effect nobody really anticipated," said Joe Hamilburg, Druken's agent. "(The CBA) is pushing many players to look at Europe." "(The departures) will just increase every year," added prominent player agent Pat Morris. - tinyurl.com/dvozg
