I would have chosen someone who plays with some heart every night - like Jason Blake.
I guess they are trying to light a fire under him but it's a poor choice. He is not exactly the personification of leadership.

What are they thinking?
Oh . . . its the Islanders. Sorry -- the question was asked a couple of years ago when they acquired him from Ottawa.

It would seem lucre and job security are not enough to get him motivated to play well every night. Perhaps the Islanders are trying to appeal to his pride by making him captain,

Looks like the players chose their captain. Perhaps one's reputation ain't that true.

he was the captain of Ottawa as i recall, and I think he also captained team Russia at world championship(s) so there must be something to it.

obviously I don't think I have ever seen him play in the NHL, but I have seen him many times playing for team russia and last year when he played in RSL (thanks, Tattac ) and I really like him. just the fact that he agreed to play for his country on many occasions, when others refused to play, says a lot of good things about him in my book. but i guess his reputation in NA is somewhat different... R. His reputation here has a lot to do with perceived bang-per-buck (although for his regular season career he has scored ata 0.94 PPG rate - not too many guys like that around), and other issues revolving around money.

Perhaps it has to do with the fact that he seems a selfish, self-centred person.
He threatened to sit out unless his contract was renegotiated before it expired. Then he did sit a year because he wanted to renegotiate his contract before it expired. [Mr. Hossa follows his leadership and example].
He made a donation to the NAC . . . but then stipulated his parents be hired as “consultants” for an amount equal to the donation. When this was discovered and deemed illegal he pulled the donation.
No wonder he was thought of so highly in Ottawa!

As you would warn your daughters: Do not confuse the artist with the man.

I know about those incidents and they do sound bad, but the fact still remains that he often chose to play for his country (only peanut money involved by their standards) unlike many of his compatriots who had less contractual...hm...problems.
maybe he just wants to take all the money he can from those capitalist pigs and distribute it equally among the working class. maybe it's his way of battle between classes ;D
I'd like to know what Tattac has to say about him and his reputation in Russia

I'd like to know what Tattac has to say about him and his reputation in Russia R. As would I. Is he a prig only in "the free world"? Or has he changed/has Mad Mike encouraged him to be more of a team guy?

from Tsn.ca: "Alexei is our leader, on and off the ice. This just makes it official," said Islanders head coach Steve Stirling. "We discussed this at length with Yash and all of our veterans.R.

Well with this announcement I really don't see the Islanders in the playoffs... What surprised me just as much was Brad Lukowich scoring an A before even playing a game with the team... I know he won the cup, but a character guy and long time Isle like Jason Blake doesn't even get the call for an A? I would have figured that Parrish, Blake, Bates and Niinimaa would have been the fitting choices to provide leadership for this team.
On the otherhand they're probably trying to motivate Yashin, the move could go either way in that respect. Maybe he's ready to return to his play of old, or he could just bring his entire team down as an unfitting leader... We'll see how it goes in do time.
