Luongo flirts with perfection
The Florida Panthers are scoring only two goals a game but the way Roberto Luongo has played so far this season, it's more than enough offence.
The 26-year-old goaltender has stopped 122 of 125 shots in four games, his stingy 0.76 goals-against average and 97.6 save percentage leading all NHL starters.
As a result, his team is off to a 3-1-0 start heading into tonight's home date with the Boston Bruins.
"First and foremost, we've been playing well defensively," Luongo said yesterday from Florida. "The number of scoring chances are much fewer."
One would hope so, given Luongo set NHL records for most saves with 2,303 and most shots faced at 2,475 during the 2003-04 season. Enter new coach Jacques Martin, who brought with him his defensive philosophy from Ottawa.
"I think we're averaging 30 shots on goal a night right now, which is much better than 40," Luongo said.
