Marchant has been placed on waivers by the Blue Jackets.
If Gainey could swing a deal for Bonk (late round pick) and snag Marchant off waivers I think it would be a significant upgrade.
Marchant is light years faster than Bonk, a solid citizen in the room, and at this point will produce more offensively than Bonk. They're basically signed to the same contract, although Marchant does have a no trade.
I'm not jumping on Bonk here either, I'd give him time to come around. But for my money Marchant is a better 3rd line center than Bonk, especailly with his speed.
None of this will happen though, I'd be shocked to see Marchant slip past the Pens on waivers.

If he is placed on waivers does Columbus have to pick up half his salary? Anyways, he is a lot smaller than Bonk. I thought part of the reason for his acquisition was his "big body presence". I threw that last phrase in for you Ryan - can see how much you love McGuire.

Apparently, it's only on the way back up that half his salary would have to be paid by the team losing him.
IMO Marchant isn't good enough to be worth losing most of our extra cap room over, so I wouldn't pick him up if we aren't otherwise unloading a (significant) player, unless he were being called back up.... at 1.2 million, I'd be tempted, though it's for 3 more years, that's getting to be quite the long-term commitment.
Unless Bonk, Rivet or Souray are on their way out at the same time, I can't see us adding Marchant.
