I think that some are underestimating how much heart and soul count. Henri Richard was a little guy who led by hear will and determination. People were willing to go to the wall for him and anyone who wasn't, was ashamed of wearing the CH.
Dats may have more talent but Koivu bring something that can not be measured.

Who is this "CODE"? Is it a reputable source? I have a couple of problems with these sources. First of all, this is the internet and people can say what they want and pretend to know all sorts of things. The other problem I have is different. Even if these people are legitimate and have inside info, why do they feel the need to share it? It almost sounds as if they are betraying a trust. Then there's the disinformation theory. Suppose the inside contact is spewing junk as a smoke and mirrors thing.

People were willing to go to the wall for him and anyone who wasn't, was ashamed of wearing the CH. Speaking for myself I don't underestimate heart and soul and I think it is a key ingredient to a team just as talent is. When I see Koivu do what Richard did both in terms of hockey achievements and in terms of how he could get a team to rally and pull together, I'll agree that he's as special as Richard was for that. But for now, while I like Koivu's hustle and fireball style he's nowhere near the Pocket Rocket in my books. This year is a key year for Saku. He will play with world class linemate, has a great coach and is on a team that could go pretty deep if properly motivated and lead. It's his time. Right on a contract year and UFA one too. He will either shush his naysayers and lead us or step aside while we finally take the next step.

Rumors like this can't do much good for Saku. We love you captain, but we're trying to dump you. I don't think Gainey is behind these rumors. Just dug a little deeper and the only reasoning out there is that Ganiey was a bit upset with Koivu for not wanting to sign a long term contract. Maybe he feels that if Koivu wants to test the market next year, then he can do it at some other teams expense.

Did Gainey really want to sign Koivu longterm? If he did,and Koivu's camp balked, that maybe a possible reason for these so-called rumours(if they are not totally fabricated?) To me it would seem curious that Saku given his relationship with the team, would not jump at a chance to be signed longterm, given his health concerns. I like Saku and if for some reason Gainey feels he will not stay or just plain wants an upgrade sighting Saku's history, then it's bettter to maximize the situation, and bettewr yet with a player that is younger and has yet to show his full potential. Excluding this year being able to play with Kovalev for a full year,Gainey may feel that Saku has peaked and the time to get full value is now. There are going to be hard decisions and getting rid of popular players is going to be part of this NHL's new makeup,so you better make the right deals. HFTO

I don't like it. All the skill in the world won't win you a cup if you don't have character. This trade would be a significant down-grade in character IMO. If such discussions were involving Richards, I'd strongly consider it. He's one player that I would deem worthy of 6M / year long term.

Looks like this rumour might be dead too. Datsyuk's supposed to be returning to Detroit sometime this week.

Datsyuk signed... 7.6M for two years That's a far cry from the $6M (per season) that he was reportedly demanding before.
