You think Mario would move his Penguins while they're in the middle of building a new arena?
There are other teams that need to be moved *coughWashingtoncough*.

Aubut can go jump in the nearest lake and watch it freeze over.

If my two sons were drafted by a new Nordiques franchise and all my cousins were on the team and they gave me a job as President of the team, I would still be a Hab's fan.

Will you be some kind of insider trading the best players to the Habs for nothing? Oh, and make sure you get the GM job secured, too.

You think Mario would move his Penguins while they're in the middle of building a new arena? ...they're not in the middle of building it. The city hasn't commited to anything and the current contract with the Mellon Arena allows MArio to start negotiating with other cities as soon as June 2006. The Pens will be the first team to move, the only question is where.

If Thibault was still with the Penguins, then he could ironically be playing for his former team if this was to happen.

I think Winnipeg, with its new arena, is probably in better shape to get back a team than Quebec City.
The town here has moved on - new movies theaters have gone up, the College football team is wildly popular and most entertainment dollars are already spoken for.
I'd love to see the Nordiques come back, but I just can't see it.

Montreal fans would love to see another franchise in a French speaking city, but Bettman continues to woo the south. New Orleans Nordiques?? LOL

I'd love to see the Nordiques come back, but I just can't see it. I live in Québec City, and I completly agree with you. I don't trust Aubut. When the city asked him to show his accounts to really know if they wanted or not to grant him money to buil a new arena around ten years ago, he never wanted to show his numbers. And these days most revenue come from Luxury boxes, and luxury boxes are bought by companies, and there aren't any big ones in town. If they are to invest in sports, put the money in places where most people will be able to profit from it, not just a bunch of a lawyers... Also, most people in QC city made sacrifices to buy season tickets. instead of taking a two week vacancy in the south, well they bought season tickets. With the price they're at now, I doubt anyone will make the choice to buy these, especially not individuals, which was the case back in the day. Add to this the fact that Bettman wants to go to Houston (bigger market) or Kansas City(WTF?), and I can't see it happening either.

Since Bettman has become commissionar he has overseen hockey return to markets that failed in the past ...... Kansas City would add to that list. Remember the Kansas City Scouts? They became the Colorado Rockies who in turn became the New Jersey Devils. Since Bettman was commissionar hockey has returned to the previously failed sites of: 1) Colorado 2) Atlanta 3) Minnesota 4) Ottawa So why not bring it back to Kansas City? I am surprised Hartford, Cleveland, Oakland and Hamilton aren't on the list ... they all once had teams too!

From what I have read, Kansas City is the favorite to land the Penguins. They've just built a new arena which apparently has sold 60 of its 72 luxury boxes, even though there is no tenant (allegedly no tenant, the NHL wouldn't have a deal in place to move them there already, would they?). The arena is owned by Tim Leiweke, who is currently president of the LA Kings, and who is a member of the NHL executive board (gee, I wonder which way he'll vote when it comes time to move the Pens?). Leiweke has made some rather strong, blunt statements of late, about moving the Penguins to Kansas City, and what a success they would be there. Statements that had some people wondering if he broke some NHL rules, conflict of interest and stuff.
I also thought I read somewhere, but I can't find any link to it at the moment, so I could have been wrong, that Lieweke had strong ties to the Penguins minority investor Del Baggio (sp?), who was the guy who tried to buy the Penguins just before the lockout ended, and who ended up being Mario's business partner. But like I said, I can't find any link to that at the moment.
So anyways, you have a mid-west American city (Gary loves those), with a new arena, with 2/3 of its luxury boxes sold, owned by a member of the NHL's executive board who publicly states he wants to move the Penguins into his arena.
Hmmm... Doesn't look good for Quebec...

The logo of the NHL Kansas City Scouts (1974-1976). That looks like a two-headed horse with a bag on the other head.
