OMG...has anyone else heard MT's rant against his team this morning? I don't have a link but he really tears into his defense saying that they are trying to be the worst defense in the league....or something to that effect...it gets worse...
If someone has a link, please post it so we can listen to it.

Yeah I heard it and couldn't believe his reaction. Makes me wonder if he's playing with a full deck.

I wonder how veterans players will react to this....
Will Therrien lose some players already ?
Or will he shake them enought to get them back on track......
I suspect Therrien doesn't finish the season behind the bench.... It's one thing to treat 18 years old players like that, but I am not sure that it will work with the pros (even if they deserve it).
Only guys like Pat Quinn can do speaches like that and have an impact. Therrien is still very green at the NHL level to pull something like that IMO. He is slowly signing is "pink slip"

Like I've said in the past, his bullying techniques work well when he has the players by the short and curlies, as in the juniors. It's a different ballgame when you're dealing with pros. Now, if management backs him up and makes some moves it may work short term, but that's about it.

Therrien did exactly what was needed. I've criticized him in the past, but he is doing the right thing ripping the Pens publicly. 1. He is replacing Olczyk who was too easy on the players. 2. He is saddled with a bunch of ageing me first stars who are established NHL veterans. 3. He needs to get the fans on his side if he is to make the big changes that are needed. 4. He is showing his disappointment in the status quo. 5. He is making it clear what he must do and why. 6. If he is going to tell Recchi and LeClair et al. to do sprints, they have to know why! 7. Pittsburg has some outstanding talent and is not producing. Bringing in more talent is not the answer. Getting the charges to work is what is necessary. Good job MT. Give em hell! THe message was sent and it is clear.

THe message was sent and it is clear. I am not as convinced as you that Recchi, Leclair, Palffy, Gonchar and company will react too well to those threats. They might think quietly...."listen buddy, you've been here 3 weeks, tone it down with the insult...", and if you're not happy, trade us and get us out of this pittsburgh misery..... Now if it was coming from Scotty Bowman, the effect would probably be much different. Maybe it was the right things to say, but I don't think Therrien has gained enought respect yet to pull a rant like this after a 3-1 lost to Edmonton !

It's a bold move by Therrien for sure. I think he's right though. The days of the Penguins Country Club are over. Those that don't want to tow the line will be dumped.

Unless things turn around, those comments put be the end of Therrien's NHL coaching career.

Let's face it, any coach for the Penguins is just a puppet on a string. An interesting comment on TSN during the intermission, "Do you not think Lemieux had advance notice of his comments and gave him his blessing?". If so, how do look him in the eye next time you meet in the hallway? I know a couple will demand to be traded.

I think what Therrien did was wrong. You don't hang your entire team out to dry like that, especially when you're a new coach. It's one thing for someone like Scotty Bowman to say something like that, but Michel Therrien?? He has absolutely no polish and no class.
This guy is out of his league as an NHL coach. He was when he was with the Habs and now again with the Pens.
He belongs in Junior, the ECHL or AHL.
Unless he miraculously gets the Pens winning again, I can't see this guy back in the NHL after his stint with Pittsburgh is up.

A day after Penguins coach Michel Therrien said his teams' performance was ''pathetic'' and that half of the squad ''doesn't care'' in a 3-1 home loss to Edmonton, Pittsburgh allowed a goal 10 seconds into the game and spent much of the rest of the match throwing punches. Therrien thought his team showed some spunk. ''For the first time this year, that team stuck up for each other and that's a good start even if we're in January,'' he said. ''I liked the way the guys responded to a tough start. ''When we go down by two goals so early in a game, mentally we're kind of fragile.'' There were six fights, two at one time in the second and third periods, as the teams combined for 152 penalty minutes, tying a Blue Jackets team record. Ryan Malone scored the lone goal for the Penguins and rookie Sidney Crosby, the team's leading scorer with 48 points, was held pointless for the second consecutive game after a 10-game points streak. ''Tomorrow we're going to have a quality practice,'' Therrien said. ''The last few days we've gotten away from our system. ''If we don't play well our system is not going to work.'' www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=150386&hubname=nhl

He probably realized he screwed-up, How can he think his team is SOOOOO horrible in a 3-1 lost and then "liked what he saw.." in a 6-1 lost. I agree with Forum Ghost, Therrien is no NHL calibre coach IMO.

My initial reaction was, "... Michel man, have you had your dose of bran today?" He really tried playing a guilt trip on his veteran team and, at least in the short term, it backfired as they went down 6-1.
Bare with me for a minute guys. I remember an Ottawa Rough Riders/Hamilton Ti-cats game back in the early 70's. The Roughies fumbled five or six times in the first half alone and the Ti-cats went into the break leading 16-1. The Ottawa coach, Jack Gotta, walks into a very somber dressingroom and says in a very low, dejected vioce,"... you guys look like bums ..." Final score was something like Ottawa 40ish, Hamilton 16. It was a veteran team and that's all it took.
I think Therrien had the right intentions, but his vehicle was completely wrong. But, guys, if you want to make an 18-year-old your assistant captain on a team of veterans, you have to live with the implications of your decision. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Crosby is the cause of this collapse. But, if this was an unpopular decision with the veterans, Therrien's outburst must be just as bad, if not worse.
Good luck Michel.

MThead is coaching? Who? I missed the memo. If he coaching a roller ball team or WWF female wrestling team then he will do fine. On the other hand, if he came back and tried to coach a team like the Penguins, then he signed his career death warrant. maybe it's for the better, after all, there is a dire need for hemorrhoid cream salesman.....
