If you were a gm and could have one of those options locked up for a 5 year contract who would you want and why?

I'd take Ovechkin. He's playing at the highest level, IMO and should continue to get better. What's most impressive about him, is that he's producing at almost the same rate as Kovalchuk, but plays a more gritty game, is better defensively, and doesn't have star line-mates. He's -1 on a team that's -44 in goal differential.

I'm a defense junkie. Phaneuf trumps them.

I'd take Crosby because he WANTS to play here. And because his young, winning attitude would attract players who want to win too. Montreal would be THE place to play once again. Crosby could handle the pressure, too. You can tell....he thrives on it....a la Gretzky. He would own this town.
However, we're still going nowhere without a #1 goalie and a couple more solid defensemen.

He's gonna be something special.

It would be hard to choose but I'd have to go with Ovechkin, he's bigger, faster, he can hit (not saying crocby can't) and he IMO is better goal scorer than anybody in the NHL. Its hard to come across a guy with this kind of offensive skills.

I'd take Sid the Kid in a heartbeat. Ovechkin is 2 years older (born Sept. 17/85 vs. Aug. 7/87 for Crosby) and was playing in the Russian Super League as early as the 01-02 season (to his credit, but also means he was getter much better experience than Crosby earlier on). Ovechkin is certainly a prolific goal scorer and could very well outscore Crosby over his career. However, Crosby is much more than just a goal scorer (but he'll get more than his share during his career). IMHO Crosby is a much more complete player who has the ability (a la Gretzky) to see what's happening on the ice almost before it even happens. He has the skill to make any player better. His playmaking ability is already without par in the NHL. Once he grows up a bit (both physically and emotionally) he'll be "lights out"! And you can't question his desire and courage - he doesn't back down from anyone or anything.

For a franchise without a dominant defenseman (and a history of being defensively dominant) Dion Phaneuf is my main man, my building block - he scares the veterans of the league into rushing their passes and losing the puck in their feet etc because they are constantly aware of where he is...
A team of elite defenseman with a bunch of 2nd tier forwards - like the Cory Stillmans and Marc Savards of the world ... a level lower than the Ovechkins, Crosbys, Kovalchuks of the world - would do better than a team of elite forwards with 2nd tier defensemen...
The Habs need an elite D man who can score, hit, pass, and lead - Phaneuf is the man...

I like the Staals. Both are big young stars with a ton of upside. Eric can put the puck in the net and Marc is an above average D-Man with great size for his age. I also like the idea of having 2 Staals since it could sway the other two to sign with the Habs as well (Jordan and Jared). Hey, so long as were living in a fantasy world I can dream right? LOL ;D

I think Malkin's got the most game. He'll be a true upper echelon player in this league. He's big, he's fast, he's gritty and has great hands. Once he matures he'll be giving every goalie in the league cold sweats and nightmares.
My Lord he'd look awesome in a Habs jersey!

Unfortunately Crosby, Ovetchkin and Kovalchouk are in Non Habs Related Hockey! My choice is Crosby, but I have a personal list of Sandra Bullock, Cristie Brinkley and Cameron Diaz. My list has as much chance as Gainey's of coming true.

If we obtained Crosby, would he play alongside Corey Locke in Hamilton or would he join Perezhogin, Plekanec and Kastitsyn on the Hamilton/Montreal shuttle?

Living in Cgy, I get to see Phaneuf on a regular basis. Granted he's a couple years older than Crosby and therefore more experienced, but in my opinion, he's the REAL DEAL. Taking Ovechkin out of the equation (that guy is out of this world!), Phaneuf is as good a combination of offence and defence as I've seen in a long, long time.

Ovechkin.
Players with his goal-scoring ability are rare. He's a threat to score each and every time he's on the ice.
Can't say that about too many players in the NHL.

Is it Jordan or Marc Staal? Jordon is an undrafted center, while Marc is the defensemen.
Either way, I think I lean towards having the Staals. Especially if it’s Marc, the defenseman. While those other guys are great, getting TWO players trumps them. Eric is already a superstar, in the Ovechkin/Crosby class, and while Marc will probably never be as good as Dion Phaneuf, he is nonetheless on track to be a #1-2 shut-down defenseman. Even if its Jordan, I take them. Jordan is already huge, has immense talent, and could be the next Joe Thornton.
And since they’re Staals, you knowing you are getting hard-working, character guys to boot.
