I am watching the Oiler-Ducks game and Francois Beauchemin looks very good. He would easily be our #2 d-man on the left side after Markov.

He plays 22:12 per game and is a -2 on a team with the same number of wins as the Habs. I haven't seen him play, but that suggests that he could be an improvement on some of our dmen.
I just caught the end of Columbus-Vancouver. Ron Hainsey played 17 minutes in a 7-4 loss and wasn't on for any goals (but partly because he doesn't get much PK time - the Canucks scored 5 PP goals).

Losing them wouldn't be so hard to take if there had been some return for them - anything. Even a draft pick.

Jason Ward has 21 pts and is a +3 already. Aren't we looking for 4th liners? IMO Jason Ward has more skill than Aaron Downey. Ward is also on pace for more points and a higher +/- than Zednik and Bonk. We lost him for nothing and we're still looking for RHS.

Well, Ward would probably take the place of Pleks and Higgins (if he played at all), who have 19 and 15 pts respectively. Would Ward really be an improvement on either of them? I could see him maybe on our fourth line, but he plays 13+ minutes a night for the Rangers, and would probably have played a lot less on our 4th line (especially under CJ), so his numbers would be lower. It would have been nice to get a pick for him if possible, but I don't know that we have really lost much by not having him on our team.

I believe the Habs made him an offer that he turned down. Not the same situation as Hainsey or Beauchemin.

From what I remember we made no offer to Ward he was let go.
And I see him playing in place of Zednik on the 3rd. If he is capable of playing 13 + on the 1st place team in the Atlantic, he's not good enough for us?
Maybe I have something against Zed, but if he ain't scoring, he is the most useless forward on our team who brings nothing else. BTW, he is presently not scoring.

Meanwhile Hainsey is looking better all the time. Bah...we have Streit........our seeing eye dog to the Promised Land.

It would be a shame if Côté is (mis)handled the same way. I was one of those who liked seeing new blood in the lineup (yeah, I wanted to give Streit a chance too), but Beauchemin and Hainsey?
BC, you're Streit reference made it around the office. Good for a chuckle.
Cheers.

I've got one thing to say , hind sight is 20/20. You're right, but I don't totally accept this from an experienced GM like Gainey.

True HA, but you can't force the guy to sign. If he upped the offer to Ward people would probably complain that he's getting too much. EDIT: I saw Ward interviewed on TSN tonight. The reporter brought up playing time & he mentioned that he just wasn't getting that opportunity in Montreal. This was probably the reason he moved on, not just the money.

The guy was drafted to be a first-line winger, but was constantly injured which really hurt his development. Didn't get an opportunity? I don't think he's getting any more playing time in a Rangers uniform.
