Flames look a bit hungover from last season. I don't know if he'll be any help.

good depth move? The guy is a disgrace to hockey, and he's a pilon. How is that going to do any good in our "new" NHL? You gotta skate to make it in this league. And I don't think he has anything left in his 36 year old legs.

How bad is it in Calgary - Marchment couldn't even beat out Berg & Belak in Toronto.

Not saying that I like the guy, but I do think that it was a good depth move based on the fact that he's a veteran NHL defenceman who the Flames can call on when injuries hit. I know that in the playoffs I would rather call on a veteran like Marchment rather than some green horned kid from the AHL.
As for not being able to beat out Belak or Berg, not sure that explains much. In the last NHL season, Marchment had a better plus/minus than either of the two. Both Belak and Berg have also been minus players throughout their careers whereas Marchment has been a +23. For the Flames, to have a guy who's played almost 900 games in the NHL as a depth defenceman is better, IMO, than having guy who has no NHL experience. Especially when the Flames get into the playoffs. The move must make sense on some angle, because Darry Sutter hasn't been known to make many foolish moves since becoming Flames GM.
Sure Marchment's one of the dirtiest hitters ever, but as a cheap 7th or 8th defenceman I don't think that it's a bad move.
