Sounds like idle speculation.
I'm sure they are disappointed in Souray but I think they may give Mark Streit a better look before they made a deal like this.

What kind of D is Niinimaa, anyway? Great skating, Non physical, Offensive one, ok in his own zone. Seems custom made for the new rules but is struggling so far. I'd much rather wait for Souray to put his game together than to have this guy... If the NHL decides to tweak the game a little in order to give dmen a bit of leeway to clear the front of the net, we would sadly regret letting go of Souray for Niinimaa. Especially in the playoffs. Everybody is still adjusting. Refs, coaches, dmen, forwards, etc... The game still hasn't settled to a stable state and so in the case of Souray I'd wait.

He really hasn't been the same since the Oilers traded him to Long Island. He was heart-broken about the trade when it happened, and I don't think he's ever really gotten over it.

I would pass on Niinimaa. His salary is too high and his offensive game is not good enough to make up for his defensive shortcomings.

While his talent might be tempting for our PP, he would have to replace Souray or Bouillon on the blueline. Bouillon has been one of our most consistent performers. Souray, for all his struggles so far this year, brings and edge to the team that it needs. While our defense is far from perfect, change for the sake of change isn't the answer.

While our defense is far from perfect, change for the sake of change isn't the answer. Absolutely. To be worth it, a dmen acquisition would have to be a clear cut top 2 guy which will mean that one of our current top six guys (Markov, Rivet, Komi, Souray, Bouillon, Dandy) would have to go (I don't think any of them would be happy as a 7th dmen...). Markov and Bouillon have been the best to date. Komi is the future of our line of defense and we just acquired Dandy. This leaves Rivet or Souray. If we believe Souray is about the only guy on this team capable of intimidating an opponent, than you're left with... Rivet.

Well, if Niinimaa did come to the Habs, Dandenault might see full time action at RW on the 3rd/4th line. OK, full time until late in games when Julien opts to use him instead of Komisarek.
The trios and pairings could be this, once injuries are healed of course:
Zednik ------------------- Koivu ----------------- Kovalev Higgins ----------------- Ribeiro ---------------- Ryder Bulis ---------------------- Bonk ----------------- Sundstrom Plecanec ---------------- Begin ----------------- Dandenault
Markov ------------------ Rivet Souray ------------------ Niinimaa Boullion ----------------- Komisarek
