Apparently both parties come to an agreement on a salary between 5.5 and 6 mil per season for 5 years.
That's not too bad for argualbly one of the best PP qback in the league and a guy that plays with a lot of grit in his own end. At 30 McCabe is at his peak.

I don't know. Six million is getting close to the max and the leafs are now committed to Kaberle & McCabe for 5 years each. I heard McCabe's deal also includes a no-trade although I have not seen it confirmed yet.
McCabe is strong offensively but average in his own end. And after these two guys there is a big drop off on Toronto's D. I guess this sets the bar for guys like Redden & Chara.

Mr. Cough-Up-The-Puck-Alot is being way overpaid. He gets points because he gets loads of icetime and shoots alot. His defensive play is subpar actually. By gritty you mean dirty. He never gives up a chance to add a glove to the face or crosscheck after the whistle. It's guys like him that make me despise the Leafs. Go Ferguson.

And ... when he gets called on a penalty he will almost always plead innocence in a very animated way so as to say to the fans, "... look what we have to put up with ..." There's no difference in what he does and what Carolina does as a team ... appeal to the referee in a way that shows "we were wronged." Oh, I'd love to see him as a PP specialist in Montreal (3rd in points among defencemen I think). But, depending what team we're playing that night will dictate whether or not seven defencemen should be dressed. And, as JKR suggested, what will the defensively-responsible Redden ask for now that McCabe got what he did? I heard the skinny on TSN last night in that the NYR may have an $8/$9 million dollar offer on the table for Chara as well. And when you take into consideration what Chara brings to the table compared to McCabe ... ouch! You can't dismiss what McCabe has done for the Toronto PP. But, he's a one-dimensional d-man. The sad part ... if the Leafs didn't pay him, someone else would have I'm sure. Cheers.

One one hand I'm happy to see the Leafs handcuff themselves with that contract for an overrated player.
On the other hand, however, where does that put the value of Markov when we try and lock him up long term? I can't see it being less than 4 million / per.

I think 20M or so for 5 years would be a good deal for the Habs if you consider we would be locking up our best defensemen and number one pp guy...

Not sure I would want a 36 year old McCabe on my team at that price in a couple of years.

There are one's of us who are not happy Ferguson is re-signing McCabe. His numbers are misleading. It was because of Kaberle he got those numbers. When he was paired with someone else, he stunk out the arena. Teams figured him out and he stopped producing like the beginning of the season. And....without Kaberle, McCabe is just average. Don't pay attention to his numbers. If you look past those numbers you can tell he's only just average. $5.5-$6M is way over paid. Anything over $900,000 or $1M is over paying him. We hit the ceiling when we heard about the NTC. We would rather see the Leafs cut him loose than to see him being overpaid with a NTC. If he's average now, just think what he will be like in year 5 - way way below mediocre. He has a short shelf life. He was pretty good the first couple of years, but if he's on the same team for too many years, he ends up just being average.

Check this out: Leafs give McCabe deadlineThe long drawn-out Bryan McCabe saga could be over by Thursday night. According to the Toronto Star, the Maple Leafs have given the defenceman until 6 p.m. Thursday to decide whether to accept their contract offer or it will be pulled off the table. The Leafs and McCabe agreed to terms a few weeks ago on a five-year, $28.75 million deal, but McCabe has yet to sign it, leading to speculation that McCabe does not want to stay in Toronto because his wife wants to move back to Long Island, where her family resides. With free agency set to begin Saturday, the Leafs do not want to be stuck without the freedom to pursue other options, such as trading for Edmonton's Chris Pronger.[/i] Interesting. My buddy is really hoping this is a sign Pronger is on his way to Toronto. But, speculation has it that McCabe's wife wants to go south of the border, while Pronger's wife wants ... I dunno Like a bad soap opera. Cheers.

On TSN or Sportsnet (who can tell the two apart?), it's being reported not only that it's a no-trade clause, it's also a "can't send me to the minors even for conditioning" contract. Looks to me like T-O has an anti-Fergie running their team...a guy who doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings and gives them anything they want in order to play (happily) for the Leafs. Boy, do I get bad vibes from the way Johnny Jr. is running that team. Good thing it's the Leafs. How fast can you say "missing the playoffs two years running"?

Believe it or not, but McCabe's career NHL average is 35 pts/season. He's topped 50 pts only twice in his career. Not too impressive for someone who is supposed to be an offensive defencemen.
IMO, he's a highly overrated, one-dimensional defencemen who had bloated numbers this year because he was about to hit free agency. Not to mention the fact that he was a -1 this past season despite putting up 68 pts.
The Leafs are going to be regretting this signing for years.
