Mathias Brunet has to be the most credible sports writer in Mtl. Something is in the work, most likely with the Blackhawks. He wrote that it's past the rumor stage. Ribeiro is definitively involved but also other important players. Sorry I don't have the time to translate it this morning. www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20060112/CPSPORTS01/60112038/1002/CPSPORTS

Beat me to Yeti. Looks like Ribs, a defenceman, and a youngish veteran. Saw this story on hfboards.

Gotta love babelfish:
Gainey would have placed several calls with the four corners of the League these last days and Mike Ribeiro, inter alia, is used to him as soft food.

I take it that soft food should have been translated to bait. In any case, with the way Ribiero is playing now, I don't know what Gainey could hook with him.

who can be considered a youngish veteran? my first thought was Zednik but sending both Ribs, Zed AND a dman would have to bring in some serious return. the only other players that come to my mind and fit that description are Bulis and Begin. but are those the players that BG would trade unless he's getting a big return?
I forgot about Dagenais. he would also fit the description but it would probably also mean that this is only a minor deal. Ribs, Dags and Streit for Lapointe and Simpson? or Spacek and a forward?

The trading partner makes sense. The Blackhawks have been struggling just as bad as the Habs lately.
Seabrook or Barker would be great, but I'm still not sure I would trade Komisarek.
Oh well, I guess all we can do is wait and see.

Oh well, I guess all we can do is wait and see. I'm hesitant to let Komi go too. He could easily be our Scott Stevens for the next ten years or more. I only mention him as a possibility because I would love to have either Seabrook or Barker and you can bet if Talon was willing to part with one he'd want a young defenceman back. Barker isn't the hitter Komisarek is. Cam has great offensive tools though, and isn't small. His mental game, coolness under pressure, ability to lug the puck up ice and get pucks on net from the point are all things I really like. Seabrook is probably a compilation of both. Not as offensive as Barker, and not quite the hitter Komisarek is. Brent is also in the middle size-wise. Seabrook was having a strong year before getting hurt. The fact he's on IR means he can't be traded though.

i don't think that chicago is in the position to trade away a #3? pick at this time, they're in full rebuild mode. look for gainey to try to get decent grinders or another defenceman.
adrian aucoin anyone?
my guess is that the reason that gainey and his money guy went to colorado last night was to talk to gillette about contracts and if they make a trade what kind of player to get as far as money is concerned both short and long term.

doing a little CAP math:
Since it is generally accepted that the HABS stand at about 36M, it means that so far they spent about 18M. 39-18= 21M. So even if we were not to dump ANY contracts, HABS could acquire the equivalent of roughly 6mil of new annual salary and still be under the cap for this year. I.E. we have plenty of CAP room. But is there budget space ? Only GG can tell...

Seabrook or Barker would be great, but I'm still not sure I would trade Komisarek. If he is part of a trade would it surprise you? I mean, whose been his mentor in Montreal? Quite honestly, I understood the decision not to re-sign Brisebois but at the time I was aprehensive about letting a veteran defenceman go.

Didn't Aucoin injure his groin last night? If so, he's untradeable until he returns to the lineup.

It would be penny wise and pound foolish to say no to any additional salary if it increases the odds of making the post season. We are not talking about a massive increase in payroll particularly since BG is sure to trade some salary in return. Unless, of course, GG is willing to give up on the season which I seriously doubt. He wouldn't be in business for long if he was not something of a risk taker.

Brisebois was never a good mentor. Last year Brisebois played the way a veteran d-man could. And, it didn't matter what mistake he made. If he made one it was Brisebois-type mistake and he was grilled. I think Gainey would have entertained retaining Brisebois if it weren't for the club option. But, it's also part of moving ahead with promoting team development I guess. Cheers.

The fourth period had the following
"Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey has apparently seen enough. With just three wins in their last 12 games, the Habs have fallen down the ranks and out of a playoff spot. While the likes of Saku Koivu, Michael Ryder and (to a lesser extent) Alex Kovalev produce on a daily basis, the team needs an all-around effort to win.
Head coach Claude Julien has tried to mix up his lineup, hoping that someone would gel somewhere, but it hasn't worked. It's time for a change.
According to La Presse, Gainey is in the midst of trying to complete a significant trade that would change the chemistry of his club.
Gainey is apparently serious discussions with a number of teams, one of them being the Chicago Blackhawks. La Presse suggests that the Hawks' three most attractive pieces of inventory are Mark Bell, Kyle Calder and Tyler Arnason, with Bell being the most appealing and most expensive. Montreal apparently is also interested in expensive veteran defenseman Adrian Aucoin
The paper claims the Habs are offering center Mike Ribeiro in a package deal that would also include a defenseman and a younger player.
Blackhawks pro scout Marc Bergevin was in Colorado yesterday keeping a close eye on the Canadiens, while Montreal's Director of Professional Scouting, Pierre Gauthier, has been attending Chicago games. "
