a friend of mine called me this morning and said that george gillette should offer a significant amount of cash and just buy sidney crosby from the financially troubled penguins. $20 or $30 million might get it done, and it wouldn't count against the cap. i told him we're already selling out the building without him. he countered with the fact that they could raise ticket prices, and let's face it, if george pulled a deal like that offer habs fans around the world would go nuts.
so...what do you guys think would get it done? it isn't totally unrealistic given the financial peril that the pens are in, possible relocation, etc...

Can a team do that?

L.A. Kings essentially did that in the Gretzky deal...sure there were player-swaps, but an "inducement-cheque" somewhere in the vicinity of $15 Million was involved. Even if "allowed" I believe this to be a very dangerous precedent. CO

technically no. But like in the Jagr deal, you must throw in a couple of no name prospects to get the NHL seal of approval... That being said, a 30mil buyout seems too excessive to be approved as it would open the door towards a path they don't want to go... As well, Sid is the only thing that gives any value to the franchise, if Mario is looking for cash he'd be much wiser to sell the team with Sid in it than take GG spiff and be left with a value-less franchise...

dangerous how? it's a business first and foremost. to respond to the crosby adding value to the franchise, $20 or $30 mil in the bank would add a lot more to the franchise right now which is what they need. cash is king. everyone has a price, what is mario's?
sid would be all for it, he's made it known that he would love to play for the habs one day.
besides pittsburgh still has a lot of good prospects and the money could come in handy for stability right now.

Dangerous in the sense that deep pocket owners could rule again by using the almighty dollar. If GG would have 30mil (he doesn't BTW) to put on Sid, how much do you think the Rangers could put in? The Leafs? The Wings... etc... Suddenly drafting players becomes a run at being able to sell picks to the highest bidders... You're back to the days of deep pocket teams cornering the market but instead of picking up 30 years old free agents, they now snatch the team's best prospects...

If that were done, I would love to be Sidney's agent sitting at the bargaining table. The team would pay Sid the Kid the maximum and hire Sidney's father at $10,000,000 to be the public relations relation.

Which is basically how the soccer market works. Meaning 10 highly competitive teams all over Europe, and thousend of teams producing their future stars. Now, in an economical perspective, it works quite well for those teams, but if I got the meaning of the lock-out right, that's not what the NHL wants.

I'm pretty sure this can't be done under the new CBA. There is no way for money to be transferred between teams. Trading players for cash was not uncommon under the old CBA but it is no longer permitted.

Even if it could be done (which I doubt) don't you think Crosby would go to the highest bidder. I think both Ed Snider and the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan have more money than Gillett. Come to think of it, I'll bet Tom Hicks and a few others have thicker wallets, too.

This is how it's done in soccer overseas. Teams "transfer" players to other teams for "fees". I don't think it's the way the NHL should go. It would be great to have Crosby or Ovechkin in the lineup, but we'll have to wait until they're 25 to take a stab at them.
