Alex Tanguay to Calgary for Jordan Leopold, 2nd round pick (2006) and conditional 2nd pick in 2007 or 2008...

I like this for Calgary as far as on ice goes. But Pierre Lebrun was reporting that he is at 3.5 million & eligible for arbitration - that award could make his salary much higher.

It's a caculated gamble, but a necessary move. Leopold is a good puck mover, but never lived up to the offensive billing he was always given. Tanguay gives them a bonafied offensive producing forward. He can play the LW, and he can play Centre. He's good at both playmaking and scoring. He should be a nice compliment to Iggy.

IMO Calgary got Tanguay pretty cheap. Leopold was a bust and a couple of 2nd round picks is nothing.
Sounds more of a Salary dump on Colorado's end to me.

They definitely need the $$ for Blake, although he may sign at a discount. I guess with Wolski and Svatos they felt they could live without Alex. I don't know what the next two drafts are shaping up to be like depth-wise. Seeing as they are conditional - likely on whether or not Alex is re-signed by the Flames - it's not a huge price to pay.

Makes me mad that we let Tanguay get away. First we didn't stand firm and insist on tanguay when dumping Theo ... and now we let him walk without offering up Higgins/Emelin and draft picks.

If Tanguay went for a so-called "offensive " d man like Leopold ( 2 goals!)& a pick, I think Higgins would have been overpaying for him. In any case, I don't think Lacroix would have let Tanguay go at the deadline, he needed him for their playoff run.

Colorado didn't want any foward in return of Tanguay. They wanted an offensive Dmen in case they lose one of their 3 UFAs' Dmen (probably Blake).
Tanguay would have cost Markov.
Even if I prefer a guy like Tanguay than a mysterious Dmen like Markov, we don't have enought defensive deep to do such a trade.
Leopold is a promishing Dmen. Even if he struggle last season, he could explode next year.

Tanguay's a guy who I've wanted in Montreal for quite some time now, but we did not have a Jordan Leopold to offer. Perhaps we could've offered Sheldon Souray at best. Leopold had a bad season, but I have no doubt that he'll rebound. Tanguay should be a force with Iggy. Good trade for both teams.

Leopold has been around 3 years & carried the tag as an offensive player but he only has 67 points in 3 seasons & had just 1 assist in the playoffs. Maybe I'm wrong but I am not holding my breath waiting for him to explode next season.

Living in Cgy, I get to see just about every Flames game. Believe me, the Flames made off like thieves with this trade. Leopold is nowhere as good as Tanguay. I'd rank him behind Regehr, Phaneuf, Warrener, and Ferrence on the Flames' defence depth chart. I have no idea what the Avalanche were thinking.

The new GM is saddled with Theodore's contract. Maybe he is trying to salvage cap space by trading a young winger so he can sign an older D man - Blake. I think it is pretty shortsighted.

During an interview at the draft he mentioned that if he kept Tanguay he would've had 3 big name UFAs to sign at seasons end. Seems anything but shortsighted to me.

At the time it looked like he was going to sign a 36 year old Blake rather than keep Tanguay. That's what I thought was shortsighted. He didn't keep Blake anyway. BTW: Who are his 3 impending UFAs?
