So why didn't we offer Cote? Or Streit? Surely they could have gotten better than this? Neither Cote or Streit come close to Gleason. Cote is still an AHLer and Streit couldn't even crack the Habs' top six last year. Rutherford wanted an NHL defencemen. Neither Cote or Streit fit that bill right now. The only player Gainey could've offered close to Gleason was Komisarek and I'm going to guess that most of us wouldn't have liked a Johnson for Komisarek deal. Streit and Cote are just examples from our team. There are 28 other teams where I am sure they could have gotten better than Gleason. If Carolina was looking for NHL ready defensemen now , then why did they trade an NHL defenseman + prospect for an NHL defenseman plus a mucker? It still leaves them with the same defense numbers. I'd be curious to see if Gainey entered the Johnson-derby.

True, but my guess would be a) that they wanted to get rid of Tverdovsky's salary. and b) that they consider Gleason as an upgrade on Tverdovsky. And as a sidenote, it should be mentioned that Tverdovsky fell out of favour with the Canes coaching staff in the playoffs. They only dressed him for 5 of their 25 playoff games. In the playoffs, it seems that they didn't really view him as NHL calibre.
