Saw this on another board and went to TSN to get the scoop. TSN.ca Staff

Now that Frantisek Kaberle will miss most of this season because of shoulder surgery, the Carolina Hurricanes are in desperate need of a defenceman.
But it won't be Jack Johnson of the University of Michigan, who was Carolina's third overall pick in the 2005 entry draft.
For the second time in less than a year, the talented Wolverine sophomore, who shone for Team USA at the 2006 World Junior Championship, has rebuffed efforts by the Hurricanes to sign with the NHL team, preferring instead to remain in college.
And it now looks as though there's a chance Johnson may never don a Hurricane sweater. The rest of the story. Johnson would be an excellent edition (although he's another lefthanded d-man). But with extent of Koivu's injury not known Gainey's priority might soon be elsewhere. Cheers.

I think any deal for Johnson would have to be to a team that can offer him an incentive-laden deal. Currently, we are not in that position.
Mulling over our roster, the only player we have that fits into the Carolina Hurricane style of play is Ryder. Ryder would look good on a line with Staal and Cole. And Johnson would be just what the doctored ordered for us. Trading Ryder would give us 4.2 million dollars to work out a deal with Johnson ($845,000 + incentives). The only thing that scares me is that we'd need a right winger on the first line and we'd need to be damn well sure that one of the youngsters (Lats, Kosts, Grabovsky) can step in and fill the role.

Carolina won't be asking for little in return, this is for certain.

Dream on! There's no way in the world Carolina is going to give away a blue-chip prospect like Johnson for Ryder, with all due respect. They'd expect equal value in return, or at least someone who has the same amount of potential as Johnson, and there's no one on the Habs' current roster who posseses THAT potential.

They have eight months to try and sign/trade him or he re-enters the draft and they do lose him for nothing. And I didnt say it would be Ryder straight up for Johnson ..... just that we'd have to remove someone from our roster (and IMO Ryder would be the only player that would interest Carolina) to free up enough room to sign Johnson. Montreal could offer Fischer/Ryder/pick or Fischer/Ryder/prospect (Lats or Kosts) .... heck just Fischer/Ryder could be enough to get the job done because no GM is going to want to part with top bluechip prospects.

He said on RDS the other night that Montreal was his favourite team growing up...maybe that would be incentive to sign before the deadline next summer. It seems that Carolina needs a bona fide defenseman right now given Kaberle's injury. Given our relative lack of depth in that position and Bouillon's injury, not sure we have what Carolina would want right now.
For the record, I would absolutely love to see Gainey swing a deal to get this kid. He is the real deal, I guess as much as any 19 year old is who still has to play one shift of pro hockey.

I think any deal involving Jack Johnson would probably include either Komisarek or Fischer going the other way. Komisarek probably has the higher value due to his NHL experience.
The article Dis posted says that the Canes are in desperate need of defenceman. I think that a package of Komisarek, picks and a quality prospect could be something that could get discussions going.

I agree but from a Habs point of view that would be a lateral move ..... we haven't seen Komi's best hockey yet and Gainey isn't about to part with a defenseman to get a rookie defenseman. That's why I would rather it be Ryder and Fischer.

The Canes want an NHL defenseman in return, and likely more. Frankly speaking, we don't have the NHL defensemen to spare. We're one seperated shoulder away from shopping a top prospect for some help ourselves...

Make it a 3-way trade with the Habs giving up forward(s)/prospects to the third team who gives up a d-man(+) to Carolina.

We can ill afford to give up an NHL defenseman at this point without leaving a huge hole in the lineup for a prospective stud on D. The prospect of having him in the system is certainly enticing though. Gainey , depending on Koivu's long term status, may have even bigger and much more immediate if not critical fish to fry. Sigh.

Clearly Montreal is weak at defence. That said, would you trade, say a, Souray for Johnson? I wonder what people on this board think. For myself, I would do it. I can live with the reduced probability of making the playoffs in return for a greater chance of winning it all. Even accounting for the negative repercussion to team morale.

Maybe try to coax Desjardins out of retirement for a year. An opportunity like this doesn't present itself often. If that's all it took I'd do it in a second. I'd even give a forward prospect and Souray to be honest, but it will take more than that. Alas, this like most other great opportunities so far, will pass us by. I like Gainey's management style, I just wish at times like this he was a bit more creative.

He's looking for NHL-ready defenseman. Give 'em Cote and Streit as a throw-in. Maybe some picks, too, if that doesn't satisfy him.

Jack Johnson has never played a single NHL game. He is a prospect like Komisarek was. Ryder is a proven NHLer, a good one and a young one. Not a deal I would make. Remember how great Wyckenheiser was going to be?

Jack Johnson and Oleg Tverdovsky for...
Tim Gleason and Eric Belanger.
Wow.
What a lousy deal for Carolina.

I can't believe that deal. Rutherford was a sleep at the wheel on that one.

Jack Johnson and Oleg Tverdovsky for... Tim Gleason and Eric Belanger. Wow. What a lousy deal for Carolina. The worst part is, in giving up Tverdovsky for Gleason, (for this season), the Canes might have more upside but they don't have more NHL ready defensemen... Still, this confirms what you said earlier, BC, about the value of young defensemen like Gleason, who've shown a bit of what they can do... I don't think it's that bad a deal for Carolina though - essentially if you figure a player is a UFA at 27, why not get a high-end 23 year old when your high-end prospect isn't looking to sign ?

So why didn't we offer Cote? Or Streit? Surely they could have gotten better than this? That would've been one step forward and two steps back - short term IMO. Like everyone else, I'd love to hear what Gainey did offer, or what was asked.

So why didn't we offer Cote? Or Streit? Surely they could have gotten better than this? Neither Cote or Streit come close to Gleason. Cote is still an AHLer and Streit couldn't even crack the Habs' top six last year. Rutherford wanted an NHL defencemen. Neither Cote or Streit fit that bill right now. The only player Gainey could've offered close to Gleason was Komisarek and I'm going to guess that most of us wouldn't have liked a Johnson for Komisarek deal.

If I recall the scouting reports on Gleason before the draft it was that he was an exceptional skater, but wasn't the sharpest stick in the package. (My words). I think the scounts call it not being able to read the play. I see this as at best a breakeven deal for Carolina and at worst, giving up a star #1 d-man (filet mignon) for a couple of journeymen (regular hamburger). I can't believe they couldn't have done better than that. Just shows how few adequate young defensemen there are around.
