Rehashing a post on another forum regarding a speculative report that the Habs are negotiating with 26 yr old Croatian 6'4" 220 pound defenseman Goran Bezina currently playing in the Swiss league. He has a boomer of a slapshot recorded at 103 mph and offensive abilities but reportedly slow in his own end. Souray replacement? It seems plausible given Gainey's history. When Pierre Gauthier was reached in Germany for comment he replied, "It's too dangerous" to talk about.

Intriguing.
Will Bob "Danger Man" Gainey pull the trigger on this one? Will Goran be a Bezina Trophy winner for the Habs?

Drafted #234 overall in 1999 Entry Draft by Phoenix.
Played with their AHL affiliate Springfield Falcons in: 01/02 (2-11-13 in 66 games); 02/03 (3-4-7 in 64 games); 03/04 (11-10-21 in 74 games); 3 games with Coyotes in 03/04 (0-0-0).
Been in the Swiss A League ever since.
04/05 (7-12-19 in 33 games) (0-0-0 in 4 playoff games) 05/06 (8-14-22 in 43 games)
Doesn't sound as if he's ever set any league on fire. Wonder what his +/- is.

Goran Bezina is an anagram for Bargain Zone. Great work! And if he keeps getting that 103 mph shot waist high....defenders will call him BEAN ZA GROIN.

since Bezina is a Croat (born in Split, Croatia), I would like nothing better than to have him playing for Montreal. however, from what I've seen of him (Olympics and world championships), I do not believe that he is better than Streit who is a faster, offensively better and, IMO, smarter player. Bezina plays a more physical game, though.

I haven't seen Bezina play often these past seasons, but he's big, physical and has great shot. He spent a couple of years in Phoenix's farmteam, where is suffered under Marty McSorley. He used him as a winger, probably thinking it being good idea to use his size on the wing.
He's now having kind of a breakthrough year with 22 points in 17 games, 6th in the league. It's actually quite similar to Streit's season prior of his draft. However, his game is not comparable to Streit's. He's tougher, more solid in his own zone, but lacks Streit's offensive creativity. He compensate with a strong shot. I am not sure how his speed and mobility would do in the NHL, but he's not as slow as I've read on some places.
I don't know if he's worth the risk. He would probably like to come over, especially in Montreal. A two way contract probably wouldn't hurt the Habs, given the thin defense corp.

given the thin defense corp. Thin? The ice is so thin on defense when they stop, the ripples crack the ice. They have signs back there that read "Danger-wear your bathing suit"

Côté seems to be the only call-up worthy d-man in Hamilton at the moment. Some depth on the farm, and an opportunity for Lever and the higher-ups to see if Bezina has any NHL potential may be a worthwhile gamble.

Kind of a strange rumour. The new NHL is all about quickness and mobility on D (just ask Derian -16 Hatcher). If this guy's weakness is speed in his own end I doubt that he'll adapt to the NHL.
Maybe he has a great point shot in the Swiss league, but will he have time to pull the trigger with two Sabers forwards buzzing around in front of him on the PK? Streit's Swiss leage dominance hasn't exactly translated at the NHL level.
With Cote, Dandenault, and Bouillon we have 9 guys that can fill in at the NHL level. Where does this guy fit? Maybe he's a good depth addition in Hamilton, but why would he want another stint in the AHL now that he's had some success in Europe?

Is he the guy everybody is suing for the movie he made or is he the guy that got beaten up by Zdeno Chara?
