from Spector's Hockey: TSN.CA'S BOB McKENZIE REPORTS THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS HAVE TRADED GOALTENDER MIKAEL TELLQVIST TO THE PHOENIX COYOTES IN EXCHANGE FOR FORWARD TYSON NASH AND A DRAFT PICK.
Spector's Note: My thanks to everyone who sent this in. McKenzie also reports a minor league player might also be going from Toronto in this deal. More info to follow. Analysis of the trade shortly on my blog.

If Tellqvist played as well against the rest of the league as he played against Montreal then he wouldn't have been the odd man out in TO. Phoenix is in need of a boost, and I can only guess that they opted for MT because of the cost. Other options must have been too pricey.

If Tellqvist played as well against the rest of the league as he played against Montreal then he wouldn't have been the odd man out in TO. He didn't play very well in those 5-1 and 6-2 losses to the Habs last season. 5.50 GAA; .814 SV % ;D Many Leafs' fans point to his performance in those two games as the ultimate reason they missed the playoffs....seeing as Aubin took over after that and played superbly. ***side note. In the first game (5-1), Tie Domi was a healthy scratch. So he refused to travel with the team to the Bell Centre. He stayed in his hotel room. When the Habs got up 4-0 in the first period he decided to go to the rink to "support the boys". What a joke. I don't miss that guy's act at all.

I recall some big saves on his part whenever he played us. Those games were more a result of total team break down and domination by us, than the play of Tellqvist.

I saw Mikael Tellqvist play alot down here with the St. John's Maple Leafs (being a season ticket holder and all). Tellqvist would play great until the other team scored the first goal ... once that first goal went in he would be fighting the puck from then on out. He has confidence problems like you wouldn't believe. I recall a game where the Leafs were up 4-0 in the third period and a slap shot went through Tellqvist to make it 4-1 about 5 minutes into the third period. I looked at my friend and turned and said to everyone around me that the Leafs were going to lose 5-4 in OT. I was so close ... they lost 5-4 in regulation. That's when I started calling him MC Telly - "Can't stop this". The best goalies Toronto had on the farm were Mike Minard and Sebastien Centomo. Somehow they fell so far down on the depth charts (to who I will never know) and were never heard from again. Phoenix must really be desperate.

Just kidding - I used to be a Flames season ticket holder back when I lived in Saint John (from day 1 of that franchise). Initially I used to cheer for the Fredericton Canadiens when they came to town, but, I have to admit, it wasn't long before I became a Saint John Flames fan through and through and cheered for them always. Don't know if I could ever cheer for a Leafs team at any level, though.

I cheered somewhat for them when they had a playoff push or they actually (rare as it was) made the playoffs. But for the most part I didn't care if they did well or not , I just liked watching hockey. I tortured poor old Anders Eriksson. You think I am hard on Bouillon, you should have heard some of the things I said to him during the game ... my seat was next to the aisle where the home team entered and exited the ice. I recall one game where Eriksson was exceptionally brutal. I was jeering him the whole night, told him to pack his bags cause he wouldn't make a Newfoundland pee-wee team, asked him if Eriksson was Swedish for "must not take man out of play". I called him everything (without using profanity - kids around and all) ... well the game went to OT and lo and behold he scored the winner. Half the players on the Leaf bench looked back at me and gave me evil looks and the entire training staff gave me the finger. LOL... Eriksson gave me a wave as he came off the ice and when he got first star ( - apparently a game winner forgives 5 defensive blunders) I leaned over and told him "See all you needed was someone to push you harder" ... he laughed. ;D

When Cujo was with the Leafs, he took Tellqvist under his wing and tutored him as a rookie. They have a good rapport and Cujo was the one who said "make the trade". Tyson Nash was a team mate of Darcy Tucker, in Junior Hockey, and also a John Ferguson Jr. draft, when he was in St. Louis. Not a bad trade for the Leafs, since they dropped a $500,000.00 ticket and also got themselves a fourth rounder.

Leaf fans are enraged with the deal. They think that they could have gotten better than Tyson Nash.
If you ask me, they were lucky to get both a player and a pick instead of one or the other for him.

Cujo was in Detroit then. Unless you are suggesting that Cujo took him under his wing during training camp ... which I doubt. Tellqvist makes $589,000 and Nash makes at least the league minimum of $450,000 ..... so the most they dropped was $139,000 , but by sending Nash to the minors they did save about $400,000 in cap space.

Thats why I said "unless you are talking about training camp" ... but I doubt he would take him under his wing in training camp. They are all fighting for roster spots. Cujo is not known to be a "teacher" ... he likes being the man. Can you show a link where Tellqvist says Cujo helped him?

Cujo knew he was number one, but realized that Telleqvist's easy demeaner would show him the respect as the number one keeper in Toronto, back then.

Cujo knew he was number one, but realized that Telleqvist's easy demeaner would show him the respect as the number one keeper in Toronto, back then. Link? I have never heard Tellqvist mention Cujo for helping him, this would come as a shock to me ... Those two years in training camp Toronto had egomanical goalies in training camp. In 2000-01, they had Cujo and Glenn Healy in camp. I truly doubt either was willing to help anyone. In 2001-02 they had a plethora of goalies. They had Cujo, Corey Schwab, Tom Barasso, Sebastien Centomo, Mikael Tellqvist, ... and I am sure there was another (Hodson?). In fact, in 2001-02 in St. John's, Tellqvist was on the verge of losing his spot in the prospect depth chart to Centomo. And if you want to see a laid back, non-threatening personality, you shuold talk to Centomo ... very very laid back. If I recall correctly there was a bitter goalie controversy in 2001-02 in Toronto with Cujo and Schwab.... If Cujo did help Tellqvist I would view that more as a slap in Schwab's and Centomo's faces because they were the ones who were on the verge of taking his role away from him ... more of a self-serving move. But I would like to see proof of your supposition ... or is it just your opinion that Cujo helped him. I can tell you one thing ... I had the pleasure to view a Maple Leaf training camp first hand. (2001-02 it was held in St. John's). And I can tell you the goalies kept to themselves for the most part and worked with the coaches, and I didnt see Cujo helping anyone. And if I am not mistaken, Cujo missed training camp in 2000-01 with a pulled groin muscle... doubt he was doing much teaching then either.
