Rumors coming from Ron Fournier of CKAC and michel Villeneuve of 100% has it that Bob is actively shopping Souray and that Detroit is highly interested with Pavel Datsyuk's name being mentioned.
That trade would be a swap of free agents but we'd be sending Detroit a hot one while receiving a struggling player. Dunno if I'd like this one...

I read rumours about Datsyuk being on the block, too, but they weren't involving a trade to Montreal.
I like Datsyuk at his current ($3.9M) or a bit higher salary, but I'm not sure how much he would want when his contract expires next summer. I think he would be a great addition to the Habs' lineup especially since there have no prospects with 1st-line potential at centre position waiting in the minors.
if this trade comes through, and if Latendresse is really the real deal, Gainey would still have an option of trading Ryder or Samsonov for a dman if needed.
and Datsyuk played with Markov in Dynamo Moscow.

Datsyuk 3-11-14, +8; Sammy 4-8-12, -1 Chelios 0-5-5, +7; Souray 9-9-18, -3 Sammy is falling behind, but is it his fault? Is a change of scenery what Datsyuk needs? Is Chelios enough of a leader to take Souray's place? Don't know that I like this one.

Further:
Datsyuk: 19 minutes a game . . . maybe the second line C we are looking for? Samsonov: 15:13 a game . . . mostly invisible, though.
Chelios: 17:36 a game Souray: 23:13 a game . . . I don't think we can afford to lose him. But I'd go for Datsyuk for Sammy! ;D

Datsyuk's career playoff numbers:
42 games, 3 goals, 12 assists, 15 points.
I pass.

Datsyuk is another dipsy-doodler. He has scored amazing goals. But if he's struggling in Detroit with a pretty good puck-moving defense.....how would he fare here?
I see it as Sammy II.

That's what I'd fear as well. While the talent level is there, we'd most probably end up with another enigmatic, high maintenance player.

High maintenance is right. Detroit has had problems with him when it comes to contract negotiations and would likely glady give him up for a good return. By all accounts, his agent is considered particularly difficult to deal with. If it's not the agent, then it must be the client.

There is no "I" in team. Pass But there is an "m" and an "e". And there is an "I" in WIN. Somethings are better the second time around ... Rocky II, Empire Strikes Back, Superman II, and Harry Potter to name a few. ;D I'd be willing to give Sammy II a chance, as the old saying goes (at least in Newfoundland) ... "a change is as good as a rest".

There are some players whose 'eccentricities' you can tolerate because of the excess of talent. I don't know much about Datsyuk's eccentricities, but his talent level is pretty darn high. I don't see him as a soft player, either.

Maybe we don't really want a second line center but do want to keep the debate going. Which reminds me of something else...

If I was a Habs fan, and I'll never be, I'd make that trade. You can teach defence but can't teach talent and goalscoring.

Doesn't sound like a Gainey-type of player, but we badly need a #2 center.
Still, first I'd try to just move Samsonov off the second line, I think Latendresse/Higgins-Plekanec-Kovalev could work.
I'd like to see Datsyuk here, but Souray is a steep price, especially while Markov hasn't been signed yet.
I'd be far more willing to let go of Samsonov though.

If I was a Habs fan, and I'll never be, I'd make that trade. You can teach defence but can't teach talent and goalscoring. Then I wish the Habs coaches would start to teach it to their D-men. This is just another year of frustration, where the D does the same thing as the last 5. But my ire is starting to show.

His birthcertificate says 44, but his equipment has been carbon dated to Jurrasic. How about taking Andre Savard instead of Chelios? Serge Savard??
