Reported on Spector's. Apparently Habs scouts have been at recent Hawks games - possibly scouting Smolinski.
He'd certainly be cheaper, and is a UFA at seasons end. Is he an upgrade on Pleks? Not to me. I see no reason to add marginal talent. If we're going to add, swing for the fence.

He's an effective two-way centre for sure and he'd help in the veteran experience department. I think he fit in well with Ottawa when he was there, but he was part of a Sens team that couldn't go over the top. I think he'd help especially if it means moving Samsonov and his contract. Would I do it one-for-one? Hard call, but Samsonov would get a fresh start in Chicago and Somlinski would make a short-term difference in Montreal. Might be what's needed to remove a discontented player and shake the lineup in the same process. Cheers.

I had considered that, but I don't think Chicago would do it. I think the only way they'd take Sergei is if we took Aucoin.
I don't think Smolinski is a bad player. I just don't think he's a significant upgrade. If we're going to make a move, we may as well shoot for one that has more potential for 5-on-5 offense.

Cross-posting: Maybe Gainey should go get Lang & Straka for him ? Even at Lang's age, I'd consider him on a short term contract. Straka is far too brittle for me. Smoke is consistent (maybe a bit boring but steady). I like Lang, but he seems to be just off this year. Even though his stats are better than Smolinski's, he's playing on a better team. And Lang's contract it $3.8M; Smolinski $1.5M. I can't see Holland taking Sammy off our hands as the Wings are gearing for the playoffs, and we'd have to sweeten the pot with Chicago. All that to say, I'd take Smolinski. But it's in the media, so neither must be in BG's plans.

Found this link on another site that states, in a Chicago paper, that a Habs scout was present at a Hawks game. The bit about Smolinski is at the bottom of the page. www.dailyherald.com/sports/story.asp?id=277013

Just what you need, another 3rd liner! The plan is to kidnap Havlat, thinking we'll only take Smolinski. The perfect crime!

Precisely. If we add more cream puffs, I'm gonna be sick to my stomach...
