All this talk of Montreal going for Forsberg made me think of who we could get as a long term fix instead of on the short term.
Oli Jokinen.
Not sure if Florida will totally sell everything but the young talent but I was thinking why not package a Goalie which they need, 2 young prospects and a pick? We all know Jokinen's a gamer and would be a great fit with Saku. It might be a pipe dream but at this point in their carreers I would love to have Jokinen over Forsberg.

I at least like the idea of planning long term rather than short term; getting someone who could work for a while rather than trying to squeeze a rental player into the line-up and trying to get him to fit in (which may or may not happen) for a couple of months. Of course, whoever is picked up has to fit in but I'd rather see someone come and stay than have him come and wave us off.

Agreed, but I'd like to see which prospects are involved. Forsberg really scares me. I can see a team overpaying and not getting anything close to what they expect.

I agree with you Franko, Like I said a couple of times before, I don't like what Recchi and Weight did last season in Carolina. I don't see how they can get as much satisfaction out of it than the guys that worked their butts off all year to get the team there. Not to mention the ice time they took away from the others. If we plan to keep the guy(s), okay! But if it's for 2 months, I don't like it. Not one bit !

I too would prefer Jokinen over Forsberg, for the reasons franko mentioned: but a) how do we match up with Florida as trading partners; b) the Panthers likely see him as a young veteran around which to build, and; c) how high would Gainey be willing to go to outbid the expected numerous other suitors?
Higgins-Koivu-Ryder Latendresse-Jokinen-Kovalev Samsonov-Bonk-Johnson Bégin-Lapierre-Plekanec
Perezhogin-Ferland
Though I think one of Ryder or Samsonov would be gone in the deal, in which case Kostitsyn would be kept on the roster.

I'd love the NHL to come up with a rule that does not allow a "rental player" to return to his "original" team the next year. I don't think it will happen and don't know how they could word it to fit in with labour laws etc, but it would sure give pause for players and GMs to jump/trade just to go back/resign the next year.

I'd take Jokkinen over Forsberg as well but how realitistic is it?
He's their offensive spine, he's productive, he's a leader, is still young and is signed sealed and delivered at a VERY affordable 5.2 for 3 more years. Chances of getting him must revolve around zero IMO.

Exactly; Example, Tucker agrees to a deal with the Leafs, they keep it secret, they trade him to Ahaheim for good value, tell him "good have fun in the sun for 3 months" and "we'll see you in July". They save his salary, get something in a trade, and get him back in July. Why wouldn't EVERY team out of the playoffs do this with their UFA. Again, I understand why they do it (and would probably do it too), but I hate it ! No way Weight deserves this ring like Brind'Amour does.

GMs are going to hang on to their underpaid non-UFAs as long as they can unless they are offered a deal so ridiculous it would be equally ridiculous to refuse it. And for some reason I don't think Jacques Martin is going to want some of the lesser lights on our roster, nor is he going to want a pick or two when he has someone already proven. They are having enough trouble filling the seats of the "Office Depot Center" [now there's a name with tradition] with the team they have, let alone to say "we're again building for the future".

I would love to have Jokinen on the Habs. Any fan would love him on their team, but trade rumours revolving around him died last year after he signed a long-term deal. I don't think he's going anywhere folks.

Jokinen: `I want to stay'BY GEORGE RICHARDS grichards@MiamiHerald.com In his six seasons with the Panthers, Olli Jokinen has seen his share of losing. On Saturday, he was part of the worst home loss in franchise history and is desperate to see some change. Only, he doesn't want out. Jokinen, who signed a four-year contract extension with the Panthers last spring, cited his commitment to the organization in refuting published reports in Canada that he is so upset with the team that he desires a change in scenery. ''There's a reason I signed a four-year deal,'' said Jokinen, whose 613 games played without being in the playoffs is the most by an active NHL player. ''I want to be in the playoffs here, wearing this jersey,'' he said. ``Those reports aren't true. They're false. I don't want to go anywhere, I want to stay here. If I wanted to go somewhere and didn't believe in this program, I never would have signed that deal. I would have looked at other options in the summer.'' Jokinen, the team's captain and leading scorer, hasn't scored in his past six games but is not one of the players coach and general manager Jacques Martin points to when questioning effort. After Saturday's 7-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings at BankAtlantic Center, Martin casually noted that games like that -- although depressing -- allow him to see how players respond. Some players pull back, and others continue to press on despite a large deficit in front of them. Jokinen knows he hasn't been scoring of late, but that doesn't mean he's quitting. ''You have to bring something to the table every night, try and win the game 1-0,'' he said. ``Otherwise you're going to be out of this league pretty soon. That's frustrating. 'We have to put our act together and stop looking for excuses. It's always easy to point fingers and say, `This guy didn't do this or that.' All we can do is bring our best every day. And I mean every day, not just every once in a while. We get paid big dollars. It's not much to ask, getting our act together for a few hours each day.'' - www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/hockey/16625207.htm

You would have the NHL make a rule for a player not be able to play close to his family? I think the players would strike if that rule came into effect. A better example would penalize the team that traded him away and then signed him with draft picks as compensation.

Sounds like Carbo, doesn't he? Sounds like a Carbo kind of guy...unfortunately, I agree with Doc, the odds of landing him are extremely remote. It would be too good to be true. THF
