Listening to Leafs Lunch on Tuesday, and one of the Toronto Sun's reporters, could have been Ziesbergger, speculated that it was Olli Jokinen that the Habs are pursuing. They needed to clear cap space and put Samsonov on waivers to do so. The cap numbers fit, according to the report. The fire sale in Florida is about to start. Roberts, Jokinen, Horton, Burtuzzi are all on the block.

Wouldn't that be a great pick up.....
Of course, assuming we are not giving up too much....

Wouldn't that be a great pick up..... Of course, assuming we are not giving up too much.... Jokinen is the best player the Panthers have. If he is obtained, we'll have to give up a lot of our assets in return. Here's a possible deal: Ryder, Perezhogin, Danis or Halak plus picks going their way. Apparently, Horton wants out of there, too. Is there a possibility of a packaged deal? Is Saku on his way out? Pot stirred.

Florida might be out of the playoffs and in a position to deal. But, giving up their franchise player might be going a bit too far.
However, knowing they'll miss the playoffs, they might have some other assets they'd probably be willing to move.
Bring in Bryan Allen for starters. He's not an impact, rushing defenceman, but does have the defensive smarts. And since goal scorers are a problem in Montreal, Gainey might want to address that as well.
Screw it ...
Ryder/Rivet/prospect for Horton/Allen
And if you want to really gum up the works add
Samsonov for Bertuzzi.
Don't have a clue what the cap dictates so it might be all moot.
Cheers.

Jokinen: `I want to stay' BY GEORGE RICHARDS grichards@MiamiHerald.com
In his six seasons with the Panthers, Olli Jokinen has seen his share of losing. On Saturday, he was part of the worst home loss in franchise history and is desperate to see some change.
Only, he doesn't want out.
Jokinen, who signed a four-year contract extension with the Panthers last spring, cited his commitment to the organization in refuting published reports in Canada that he is so upset with the team that he desires a change in scenery.
''There's a reason I signed a four-year deal,'' said Jokinen, whose 613 games played without being in the playoffs is the most by an active NHL player.
''I want to be in the playoffs here, wearing this jersey,'' he said. ``Those reports aren't true. They're false. I don't want to go anywhere, I want to stay here. If I wanted to go somewhere and didn't believe in this program, I never would have signed that deal. I would have looked at other options in the summer.''
Jokinen, the team's captain and leading scorer, hasn't scored in his past six games but is not one of the players coach and general manager Jacques Martin points to when questioning effort.
After Saturday's 7-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings at BankAtlantic Center, Martin casually noted that games like that -- although depressing -- allow him to see how players respond.
Some players pull back, and others continue to press on despite a large deficit in front of them.
Jokinen knows he hasn't been scoring of late, but that doesn't mean he's quitting.
''You have to bring something to the table every night, try and win the game 1-0,'' he said. ``Otherwise you're going to be out of this league pretty soon. That's frustrating.
'We have to put our act together and stop looking for excuses. It's always easy to point fingers and say, `This guy didn't do this or that.' All we can do is bring our best every day. And I mean every day, not just every once in a while. We get paid big dollars. It's not much to ask, getting our act together for a few hours each day.''

IMO this is just a reporter trying to connect the dot using the "Finnish Connection" between Koivu and Jokkinen like they did so often with Selanne.
Olli is productive, affordable, signed long term and still young. I see zero reason to trade him.

I not so sure guys unless your 100% convinced he'd really work well with Koivu.I mean lights out good. He's a big ticket guy that is invisible on the road,IMO he's just another expensive version of guys we have in the organization. HFTO

They wouldn't have to work together. They're both centers.

Honestly, guys, it's all well and fine to have fun with various trade scenarios; heck I enjoy it too. But objectively speaking I just don't feel Gainey will pull of the big one if it means tampering with his roster.
Sure, Samsonov is gone but I think he's probably going to try to land a rent-a-player goal scorer with the freed-up cash. It would be nice to have that player stay, granted, but unfortunately when you look at the UFA situation the club has waiting for it in the off-season, a rent-a-player will probably be all he can get.
He's got the coin, but we just don't know how he's going to use it. Logically, look at the teams that won't be making the playoffs and go through their rosters as to what the Habs need. He'll probably surprise us in a week or two.
Cheers.

Hard to argue with your logic Dis. Pleks has improved a lot in the last month. If we can get a shooter, north south type of player, for that line we may be set. I think if we can get one line going, the other will follow.
