Boston traded Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart to Calgary....for Andrew Ference and Chuck Kobasew.
Flames have a pretty impressive blue line now.
With Kipper behind them.....wow.

Great move from Sutter. The Flames offense has (apparently) been going very wel lately and adding Stuart to the back end and then Primeau will only make them better.

Great deal for Calgary. Bruins got the shaft, I'm afraid.

I guess the white flag is being flown in Boston this year. At least we're still flying the Black Flag against the east this year. Calgary just bought first place in their division.

Primeau and Stuart were two of the three (Sturm being the other) who were exchanged for Joe Thornton. Now it looks as if that trade has worked out for two teams...and they're both not Boston.

Weird. Some rentals cost an arm and a leg and others, like this one, cost a few scratches. This is like us trading the Cube and Perezhogin for Stuart and Primeau. We might even be giving away more than Calgary did. Go figger.

He's struggling this year but scored 20 last year. Perezhogin has done little in his NHL time other than acquire a reputation for getting stupid penalties. Ference vs Bouillion - can't comment because I rarely see Ference but he was good enough to play for the Flames during their Cup run & that says a lot to me.

Interesting deal. Stuart is purely a rental. I don't expect him to sign there in the Summer. Primeau is a good 3rd/4th liner, a very good PKer, and decent character. Kobasew was sorta lost in the shuffle in Calgary. He's shown glimpses of his potential, and is having a good year. He and Lombardi are sort of the same player though. Perhaps Chuck can excel in Boston. Ference is a good 5/6 guy. Good all around, but doesn't excel at anything.

I'm not so sure that Stuart won't resign. He's from Alberta, he played his junior with Calgary, he was drafted and played for Sutter. There are a lot of connections and reasons for him to stick around.

Sutter's got a long list of free agents coming up in the next couple of years: Iginal, Kiprusoff, Regher. With this latest trade there's no doubt that he's putting all his eggs into one basket and going for it this year.
Keeping Stuart might be tough, but I think that Sutter would rather keep Stuart and let Hamrlik go. And if he loses Stuart, he gets Boston's #1 choice in 2008. Either way looks like a 'win-win' situation for the Flames.
