Bruins Sign Thornton to One-Year Contract Extension
BOSTON (December 2, 2002) - The Boston Bruins have signed center Joe Thornton to a one-year contract extension through the 2003-04 season, it was announced today by Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not released.
"This was the final year of his existing contract and we did not want negotiations to drag on through the summer, so I'm extremely pleased that we were able to reach agreement on this extension," said O'Connell. "Joe is a cornerstone of this franchise. He has developed into one of the best all-around players in the NHL and I don't believe that fans have seen the best of Joe yet."
Thornton, 23, currently leads the Bruins in scoring and is tied for second overall in the league's scoring race with 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points in 23 games. He was today named the NHL's Player of the Week with 3-4=7 totals and a +9 rating in three games last week and carries a five-game point streak (3-7=10 totals) in tomorrow night's game vs. the St. Louis Blues. He has 11 multiple-point games thus far this season and the Bruins are 14-0-2-1 in games in which he has recorded a point.
The 6'4", 220 lb. native of St. Thomas, Ontario was Boston's first pick, first overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and he is currently in his sixth NHL season with the Bruins. He led the team in scoring in 2000-01 when he became just the second player in team history to lead the team in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes with career-highs in goals (37) and points (71). He finished third in the team's scoring race in 2001-02, averaging just over a point-per-game with a career-high 46 assists and 68 points in 66 games.
Thornton was named as the 17th Captain in franchise history on October 8, 2002. He has career NHL totals to date of 114 goals and 166 assists for 280 points with 424 penalty minutes in 378 Bruins games.
Did you guys get the feeling Thornton's agent just cost him and his client a few bucks? Imagine if Thornton gets 100 points this year...but now he won't cash in on that.
Excellent move by the Booins
