Shane Doan is close to signing a contract extension with the Phoenix Coyotes.
An NHL source tells the Arizona Republic that both sides made "significant" progress in contract talks on Tuesday. Doan's agent, J.P. Barry, accompanied the team back to Phoenix after Tuesday night's game and a new multi-year deal for the 30 year old could be completed as early as today.
Doan is in the final year of his contract with the Coyotes and will earn $3.3-million this season. It's believed any new deal will pay him between $4-million and $5-million a year, which would make him the second highest paid player on the team behind defenseman Ed Jovanovski.
Following the trade of Ladislav Nagy, Doan now leads the team in scoring with 19 goals and 35 points and has 11 points in his last 14 games.
Doan has played his entire NHL career with the Phoenix Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise. He ranks third in all-time games played with the team, fifth in career goals and sixth in career points. He has also been the captain of the team since 2003-04.www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=196137&hubname=Cheers.
