I'm talking about 75 points with 30 goals, what do you do about signing him? He's 27 now (I think) and can't be far away from ufa status. He makes about 3.3 now.
If he'd do it, would you sign him for 3 years at 4.33 per year? He's got to make more than Brisebois, and frankly, if he asked for Theo's numbers it would be hard to argue with. Fact is, when healthy, he's among the top 20 centermen in the league. Three years at 5 each?

Give him what he wants with lots of incentives.

This is a no brainer, as was Theo in the off season.
Give him what he wants ;D

He's the HEART of this team. I'd say give him whatever it takes and do it way before the end of the season so the media can't screw around with it.

The man is the heart and soul of the team....do what it takes to work out a fair and equitable deal for both sides....Koivu strikes me as a grounded and reasonable individual, so i dont think he would bring insane demands (Iginla-a flash in the pan?) to the table...but by all means, get it done early.

If something could be worked in regarding games played that would be an unlimate goal i think.
I also think that it's not a matter of If he has a career year it's gonna happen this guy is way overdue to have things go his way for a change.

I knew this would happen, if my lazy butt waited long enough...I've been meaning to pose this very same question for a few days now. A contract laden with incentives seems necessary to me, given his rotten luck with injuries. Either way, he's got to be the second highest paid player on the team, behind Theo.
Does anyone know his contract status? When's he due for renewal?
Further to this JV, I also wonder what we'd do without the guy? I mean, who do we have on our team that is a veritable captain?
We have a few guys that can wear the "A", proudly, and to will do it justice. Rivet, Brisebois, Gilmour (until he limps off the ice at the end of this season), Zednik, Juneau...heck, even Quintal some may argue. But a true performer, night in and night out, real soul...we don't have anyone behind Koivu.
I remember the lift he provided the team upon his return last season. It would be ugly without him around, especially with Gilmour coasting the way he is right now.

The way I'd like it to unfold is this: Koivu retires a Hab captain at age 34, playing as our second or even 3rd line center. Ron Hainsey is named captain to succeed him at age 27....
I actually think Hainsey will emerge as a true leader on this team eventually. He's got the skill and he will have the confidence....

Give him a deal with plenty of incentives. He is the heart and soul of this team and this franchise. When other people think of the Habs, they think ''Koivu'' first and foremost.

Gotta have him! by then Gilmour's 2 mill will be gone, as will Hackett's 3.6, there is enough depth upfront that we can drop a couple players to re-sign him. By this time Komi, and Hainsey will be ready, and Markov will be even better, so the likes of Quintal and Dykhuis won't be needed which will also lower the payroll enabling management to pay Saku what he's worth. But i really don't see him getting much more than 4 a year anyways. As for Koivu retiring, i sure hope he plays until around 36-38. He's missed so much already due to injury and illness, he's just getting started, 34's too young for a guy like him to retire, who's already missed so many games. (contract is up in 2003)

As much as I think Saku Koivu would be a perfect 2nd line center, I think signing him would be the best decision made by our team.. and the one of the easiest ever.
Since winning the battle versus cancer, this guy, who was already playing with heart, is the inspirationnal leader on this team. There will never be questions about how hard he's gonna play.. about how hard he wants to win the Stanley Cup.. about how hard he's gonna dedicate himself.
This guy is another Hab.. he showed it.. he PROVED it.
He should end his career here.. or, at least, lenghten it.

Amen
AS is no fool when it comes to contracts. Koivu will be signed, sealed and delivered sometime next summer. Bet on it.

From everything I've heard and known about him, I think the best bet to be our future captain could be Mike Komisarek.. he seems to have it all. However, we are talking about long term obviously.. because there's no question about who deserves the "C" right now.

We're talking like players having good years is a bad thing. We want all our players to have career years.
