Lowe puts the organization and fiscal responsibility before agent/player demands. I see nothing wrong with that. Don Meehan is notorious for trying to fleece GM's.

If as another poster reported, that Smyth was asking for 5.7 per year, then Lowe did the right thing. That's too much for Ryan Smyth.

Smyth in tears saying goodbye to Edmonton. Doesn't sound like there's a secret deal in place that "wink-wink" he's coming back...... It's hard to understand why he didn't sign for less, if he really wanted to stay in Edmonton. He has enough money....

It's hard to understand why he didn't sign for less, if he really wanted to stay in Edmonton. He has enough money.... The report I read said Smyth's people went in and asked for 5.7 Million .... after much negotiation Lowe came up to 5.4 Million. Then both parties got entrenched in their stance and weren't budging. That does not sound like a player that wants to go back to Edmonton. That sounds like a player that is saying to management "Alex Tanguay is not the face of the Calgary Flames and he makes 5.5 Million, I am the face of this franchise and won't pay me more. I am better than Tanguay, yet you expect me to once again take a home town discount but you go and give contract's to Roloson and Horcoff before me and leave me stewing up until the 59th minute of the 11th hour ... screw it, I want out"

What they will ask is - 5.4 million, doesn't sound like a discount to me.

Then leave the tears behind. crocodile tears If he thinks he's going to get sympathy I think he's way out of touch. It'll be interesting to see what reception he gets when he plays in Edmonton wearing a different jersey.

Sometimes we talk of players taking a hometown discount. In this case it looks like Smyth was getting the hometown bonus.

An interesting point is that his agent is Don Meehan. Remember all the hassles we had with another Meehan client, Theo? Meehan doesn't seem to mind uprooting someone for more money, but far less job satisfaction.
