Apparently Bruins GM Mike O'Connell has some interested in Curtis Joseph. If this is true, how much of his salary would have to be eaten up by the Red Wings? Who would the Bruins have to offer in return? Lapointe? Read about it. www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=50449&hubName=nhl

If something happens, there sure would be some great goaltenders in the NorthEast. Lalime, Belfour, Joseph, Theodore, Biron. Not too shabby.

yeah it looks like Lapointe for Cujo. But the Wings apparently want Hilbert and they could pay difference between Cujo's and Lapointe's salaries in order to get him.
There is also the fact that Cujo has a No Trade Clause and may not want to go to Boston unless they pick up the option year on his contract.
My take? Boston would be making a good deal for the short term...but long term they are taking a huge risk. Cujo is what? 37 now? Having Cujo around means Raycroft doesn't get the # 1 job for a while(probably until Cujo retires) and their other goalie prospect Toivonen or something won't get a sniff of the NHL until Cujo retires as well. So the Bruins could be paying huge money to a guy who may be their 3rd best goalie option in 2 years from now. Imagine paying Cujo 5 million per year(Detroit picks up 3 million of the 8 mil per year he makes) to be your backup or a mediocre # 1 in a year or two and you know your kid in the AHL is ready to take over the backup role but he has to wait until Cujo's deal expires. Also Cujo's salary could be a huge albatross when guys like Thornton and Samsonov enter the 8-10 million $ pay day range and if there is a cap imposed.
Plus, their forward core which keeps on getting thinner with each passing season, would lose 2 more guys who should be on their team this year.

It clearly would be a short term fix to deal with their lack of bona fide #1 goalie. The Bruins have felt that they can stay as part of the "elite" teams in the East after their great success two season ago, but they seem to be taking small steps back each season.

Losing Dafoe was no big deal, because quite frankly, he didn't play well in the playoffs two years ago. Losing Guerin however probably did more harm than good. Glen Murray racks up the points during the regular season, but he's been invisible in post-season play. Mike Knuble played well last year, too. The team is too young and inexperienced for the playoffs, but I think Joseph could steal a series or two. Unfortunately he's never gotten past the conference finals. Ever.

From what I undertand, I think Boston is one the places that Cujo is willing to go. TSN's Gord Miller mentioned this rumour last week on The Insider. The deal he mentioned was a straight up trade of Cujo and Lapointe, with Detroit possibly eating some of Curtis' contract. Both players (in particular Lapointe) are overpayed. Taking Lapointe off of the Bruins hands would be doing them a big favour. I think it would be a case of Detroit taking a player they don't really want in order to move another. Cujo could be enough to push the B's further in the playoffs, but I don't think he's enough to win all.

Report: Cujo could be out for months
TSN.ca Staff 8/20/2003
Trying to find a new home for Curtis Joseph may be on hold.
According to a report in the Toronto Sun, the Detroit Red Wings goaltender underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken ankle and is expected to be out for four or five months which means he would not be ready to play until January.
An MRI exam at a Cleveland hospital, possibly ordered by the Boston Bruins who were supposedly trying to work out a deal for Joseph, revealed that he required surgery. The injury will likely put an end to any imminent trade talks the Red Wings were having with teams interested in acquiring the goaltender.
Don Meehan, Joseph's agent, refused to comment about the injury but said he would discuss the situation further on Wednesday. Calls to Red Wings brass Ken Holland, Jim Nill and Jimmy Devellano were not returned on Tuesday.
