Here is a challange. Make up the best line up since the 60's. I am not going further back because I am sure that the players before that could not compete in size and strgnth in todays NHL. I think that the only two holdovers would be Richard and Harvey.
Let the fun begin.
Steve Shutt - Jean Beliveau - Guy Lafleur Yvan Cournoyer - Henri Richard - Maurice Richard Frank Mahovelich - Saku Koivu - Pierre Mondou Peter Mahovelich - Jacques Lemaire-Bob Gainey
Larry Robinson - Doug Harvey Guy Lapointe - Serge Savard Jacques Laperriere - Chris Cehlios
Starter: Patrick Roy Bench: Ken Dryden
I am sorry that I left off a few, but I just can't see how I am going to fit Brisebois and Reverse.
I can't place all the centers so I threw the the ones with size to the wings.
By the way, I'm coaching this team...............from my easy chair.

Good job, HA. Here's my humble selections:
Forwards: John Ferguson/Jean Beliveau/Maurice Richard Steve Shutt/Jacques Lemaire/Guy Lafleur Ivan Cournoyer/Henri Richard/Dickie Moore Chris Nilan/Guy Carbonneau/Bob Gainey Spares; Jim Roberts, Claude Larose, Murray Wilson, Pete Mahovlich (Pete was one of my favourites. He could fill in anywhere)
Defence: Larry Robinson/Doug Harvey (no arguement) Guy Lapointe/Serge Savard (why break them up now) Jacques Laperriere/JC Tremblay (a Norris winner and some class) Spare; Chelios (subtitle reads, "time permitting")
Goal: Patrick Roy (sigh) Ken Dryden Michel "Bunny" Larocque (RIP)
coach; Scotty Bowman
I'm not saying these are the most talented players in the club's history, but they all have qualities. They'll score and they'll score with respect.
Cheers.

Alright - here we go (all positions as supplied by hockeydb.com):
Forwards
Henri Richard - Jean Beliveau - Guy Lafleur Frank Mahovlich - Yvan Cournoyer - Maurice Richard Pete Mahovlich - Steve Shutt - Jaques Lemaire Bob Gainey - Guy Carbonneau - Bernie Geoffrion
The lines are really up in the air. You can throw any of these guys together and get a fantastic line. The only two I'd keep together are Gainey/Carbonneau, which is a killer of a defensive pair of forwards to shut down opposing top lines. Throw in Geoffrion with his big slapshot and they are very threatening.
Extras are Pierre Mondou and Saku Koivu
Defence:
Larry Robinson - Doug Harvey Serge Savard - Guy Lapointe Chris Chelios - Rod Langway
Alright, so Rod wasn't in Montreal when he played his best years. He was still one hell of a defensive defenceman. Throw him out there when Gainey/Carbonneau is on the ice and your opponent gets to experience total offensive shutdown
Extra is Jaques Lapperriere
Goalies:
Patrick Roy Lorne Worsely
Gotta go with the Gump for the backup position. Sorry Ken, you lost that when you went to work for Sata- err... the Maple Leafs. Such mutiny is grounds to be shot. Lucky you you were such a fantastic goalie you managed to salvage the number three netminder.
Coach: Scotty Bowman
Assistant: Toe Blake

One name I didn't see was Bill Durnan. I guess mainly because none of us ever saw him play. Pity; he won six straight Vezina trophies.
Chelios wasn't one of my favourites, but he's probably going to the HHOF one of these years.
I like CO's selection of Rod Langway. I couldn't believe the trade that brought Rick Green and Ryan Walter to Montreal. I heard Larry Robinson say on Don Cherry's "The Grapevine" that he didn't understand the trade at all. Montreal gave up three all stars to land these two guys. Mind you they did help us out during the '86 Cup run.
I also liked TNG's selection of Gump Worsley. There aren't too many players like Gumper still around. He was an old-school, let's have a few "pops and steaks" after each game type of guy. It's always good to have one or two of these guys around in the dressing room.
I didn't like Frank Mahovlich all that much. Don't get me wrong, the guy did well with Montreal until he bolted to the WHA. But, I just got the impression that he could have turned in on (or off for that matter) any time he wanted to. Some nights he was unstoppable, while other nights he simply skated around. He was my dad's favourite player.
Anyway, good string guys. Cheers.

The wing defence is a huge drop from the Hab's defence.
Redmond was no Lafleur. What about he Rockets?
On the other hand, we don't have a Howe.
Habs in 4.5 games. The .5 game is extra feature. It's when Big Bird reduces Lindsay to a pulp.

Did you know that the Red Wings actually purchased an entire league just to land Nick Libett? I have it in one of my old 70's hockey books.
I understand completely about the defense, HA. I tried my best to come up with the quality defensemen for Detroit. I went on how long they were actually with the Wings as a criteria, which explains why I didn't include Hasek.
Believe me, it was hard to find that sixth defenseman. And, you're right ... they could never match up to the Habs.
I would have included Chelios, but he had more time as a Hawk I think. I'll have to check that one out.
Cheers.
