Herb Carnegie

Born in Toronto, the son of Jamaican immigrants, his dearest dream was the same as most Canadian youngsters of his era - to lace 'em up for an NHL team, ideally the home town Maple Leafs. The main difference between young Herbie Carnegie and most Canadian boys is that he had the necessities. Upon seeing Carnegie play as a junior, Conn Smythe is reputed to have expressed his willingness to pay $10,000 to "any man that could turn Carnegie white".
