Watching the pre-game ceremonies the other night, I couldn't help but think back to the two Habs teams that Roy led to the Cup in 86 and 93. Even though those clubs were stocked with many more quality players than we have now...Roy was undoubtedly the superstar. And we haven't had one since. TSN showed highlights from that dreaded "last-straw" game against Detroit where he was basically humiliated by Tremblay.

Then it hit me...since he left...it's been the worst era since I've been around (1958).

95-96 First round loss to Rangers 4-2 (after leading 2-0)
96-97 First round loss to Devils 4-1
97-98 Second round loss to Sabres 4-0
98-99 Missed playoffs
99-00 Missed playoffs
00-01 Missed playoffs
01-02 Second round loss to Hurricanes 4-2 (Theo stood on his head)
02-03 Missed playoffs

I know it has a lot to do with poor drafting, trades etc....and things are looking better....but one thing Montreal has had since its inception was a superstar or two or three. And since Roy left....no perennial superstars.

The year 1995 was perhaps the worst thing that happened to this franchise in the modern era.

Ugh. What a freakin disaster of a year. The Leclair deal, no playoffs for the first time in years, Terry Ryan picked at the draft instead of Iginla and others, Reggie and the first MT hired and of course the Roy deal.

Loved the ceremony. Had tears in my eyes watching the highlites. Great to see the cheers from both the fans and the players. Very cool for Patrick to ask that this ceremony be held when they played the Flames (fond memories of a first Stanley Cup I imagine). It always amazes me how he can hold himself together during things like these, poor Grant Fuhr was a mess at his. Hopefully, the Habs don't delay the Roy ceremony as long as they've delayed the Larry Robinson one (when will they do the right thing and retire the man's jersey??!??)

I didn't mind the Leclair deal, because I actually really liked Recchi. The trade that was made where we had gotten rid of Recchi, however...that's another story.

As of no superstars...perhaps we could dip a little from our farm to acquire one...?
