If we make the playoffs, we can't fire the guy. If we fire a guy who took us to the playoffs despite starting with an awful team and suffering some real injuries, and has gotten production out of everyone who's trying up front, who do we get to replace him ? A big-name coach will want a team which is in better shape, and we'd get stuck with another just-happy-to-be-in-the-NHL type of coach. Why not stick with the guy we have for another season.
And as much as we like to blame Therrien for all ills, it's become abundantly clear over the year that Carbonneau, Green and Savard are just as responsible for most of the important decisions, scratches, who plays, who doesn't, etc.
Therrien is a bit of a figurehead, Savard won't want to move him just for the heck of moving around the deck chairs on the Titanic...

Yes we can. And we should. He's cheap. Eating $400,000 would be easy. And worth doing. Get a real coach. Playoffs or no, MT must go. Missing the playoffs may make it easier, but it should be done in either event. It's so obvious and fair and right and just and appropriate that it makes me sick to imagine a world in which it somehow doesn't get done.

Much agreement on this subject.
No one in organisation will shed much tears for MT, despite the fact he probably is a decent, likeable man. After all, think back to the dark days of Nov 2000...Therrien was essentially hired to be the fall guy at some point in what looked like very bleak 1-2 years next for the franchise. Now Savard will find his man. Who??
Jacques Martin makes sense but the timing may fail us. I know I hold minority opinion, but I think Carbo could do the job. Is Robinson under a new contract in NJ? I really doubt Bob Gainey wants to go behind the bench again.
Tampa, Nashville & Florida games were so frustrating, really I cannot stand to recount Therrien's follies this year.

Everyone agrees the only reason the Habs are where they are is Jose Theodore. But what everyone seems to forget, they could be ASSURED of making the playoffs if they would have picked up half of the 15 points they have blown(not counting the Nashville game and the one in TB last week) this year. Most of these points have been lost because of:
A:Moronic coaching decisions(Traverse at the end of the Wings game, starting Hackett against TB when he was still rusty, starting Hackett against Florida, scratching Markov and playing Robidas and Juneau on the PP points, playing Odjick and Berezin with a minute to go in New York, etc)
B:a lack of intensity, grit, passion, etc(Tuesday a GREAT example)
and
C:no idea how to defend a lead.
It has nothing to do with talent. It has nothing to do with the injuries, with a better coach and better preparation, we would be fighting with NJ and NYI for 6th in the conference IMO.
